📡 Big Ten commissioner: Nebraska can't remain Big Ten member if it plays football this fall

After twice evading the question on the Big Ten Network, Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren, in an interview with Yahoo! Sports, said Nebraska is not allowed to pursue a fall football schedule after the league chose to postpone its season until spring 2021.

"No," Warren said to Yahoo! “Not and be a member of the Big Ten Conference.”

In a brief statement released after the Big Ten announced its decision to postpone, all of NU's leaders — from Frost to NU President Ted Carter — announced Nebraska was still looking to play this fall.

"We will continue to consult with medical experts and evaluate the situation as it emerges," the statement concluded. "We hope it may be possible for our student athletes to have the opportunity to compete.”

Move back to the Big 12. The Big Ten has one team, one damn team that does something. Maybe two as Wisconsin throws its hat in the ring every so often. The Big 12 is way more competitive these days if you ask me. Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Iowa State, and Baylor are teams that I would take against a majority of the Big Ten.

Nebraska is no longer a member of the Association of American Universities. The only Big 10 school that is not a member. Membership in the AAU is a prerequisite for membership in the Big 10 and I was surprised the Big 10 didn't ditch them when Nebraska was dropped from the AAU.

This is a post from another thread on this forum yesterday that I wrote.

How will a school(s) join another conference when they are contractually obligated to the one that they belong?
If a school plays in the Big 10 and "joins" the Big 12, doesn't the Big 10 still own TV rights? Will the school or said conference get paid?
Does a school have to withdraw from a particular conference? There are a lot of legal issues here that have to be considered.

Nebraska doesn't have a defense. They can play in the Big XII.

Wonder if there is some kind of clause with the Big 10 kind of like our scheduled pay games with Georgia State that gives us an out? I would imagine the school has some power if the conference makes a decision the school doesn't align with and can't keep them from generating revenue. I mean, can a conference kill a sports program if they really made the decision to cancel all sports for a prolonged period of time? I would imagine Nebraska has choices and if they are serious they have lawyers willing to fight that, ESPECIALLY if the SEC, ACC, and Big 12 play football this year.

You risk more financially by not playing. Nebraska sells out every game, so their fans would support, Lincoln, much like Tuscaloosa, is built for football and it would help them more than hurt. Make what you can to offset coaching and scholarship costs.

I agree with all that! I'm very familiar with the Big Red fan base and it's legit. But you're assuming games are going to be played... I just don't see it.

As stated multiple times, I don't see campuses staying open for long. The #'s will increase due to all of the reasons any virus on a college campus would increase (dorms, shared classrooms, shared buildings, off campus roommates, pool parties, COVID parties ) and these Presidents are going to be under immense pressure to wiggle off the hook... After, of course, tuition checks have been signed for the semester.

They just need to make it to November 3rd. After that the pressure will be off no matter who wins the election.

I'd be in support of that except that Nebraska is a long way from the rest of the SEC.
