🏈 Barrett Jones killing it on awards - Remington and Capital One Academic All-American of the Year

Luke Joekel sp? won the Outland. Barrett is no doubt the best and brightest lineman to step in the trenches for the TIDE in a long time. The kid is a class act to boot. He will without a doubt be missed!!

Barrett should've won the Outland, but a back to back isn't common at all with that award

Agreed! I think that Dee got hosed on the Thorpe Award too. Banks at Miss St won it, but I feel that alot of these voters went by stories they heard. ESPN did a story on Banks earlier this season and spoke of his hardships. I think that the voters used that to decide, much like they did with Te'o getting almost every award he was nominated for. He is a good player, but he isn't the best player EVER!!

I agree. I think some of the awards are solely based on media hype. Te'o is good, but his numbers aren't scary better than everybody else's. I'm almost for certain CJ's numbers are at least just as good

Congrats to Jones. Much derserving of everything he gets and I love it when they get awarded for the academic side as well. Shows great character. Would have loved to had him on the Irish line.

As far as Manti, his numbers aren't scary because he doesn't play OLB where he has lots of opportunities to rush the passer or get tackles for losses. His 7 INT's for an ILB speak volumes, but he did have over 100 tackles and when he does rush which isn't that often, teams double up on him which in turn frees up others. His impact to the defense goes way beyond sacks and tackles for losses. If he were an OLB I don't think he would be winning awards.

CJ is an ILB just like Te'o and has 4 fewer tackles on the season. Yes we played 1 more game, but he plays mostly in nickel and dime sets for us. I don't know if you were suggesting that CJ was an OLB and thus had better stats than Te'o and thus Te'o not be deserving. Just letting you know. IMO, I think that Te'o walked away with so much hardware and is in NY for the Heisman more because of his personal tragedies than for his play on the field.

I wasn't comparing CJ to Te'o, but to OLB's in general who typically get more opportunities for sacks and tackles for losses. I have no doubts that Te'o's personal life hasn't swayed some voters, but he was in the Heisman conversation at the start of the season. The MSU game is where his rise to heavy consideration began.

From whom? Where?

When I say this don't take it the wrong way. Seriously, when it comes to college football awards the Heisman is good conversation but otherwise I don't believe it is anything more than a "beauty contest." I've been doing a little work around the house today and if I've heard "sexy pick" once I've heard it a dozen times, from a dozen different media personnel.

I see a few reasons why Te'o is one of the finalist. Quite frankly, as being the "best player on college football" as the meaning behind this trophy I don't see him belonging in NY.

He's a finalist due to his story this season. You can't make light of his personal hardships or the support he's received from Notre Dame's fan base. But, that isn't what the award is about.

The fact that he plays at Notre Dame is a large part because no matter how you would like to slice it, it's still a media driven award. Again, not what the award is about.

Being undefeated, at Notre Dame, is a large part of this as well. But again, not what...

All that said, if you put him on Kansas State's team is he in NY? I don't think so. Oregon? Again, don't think so.

USC carries weight with its name as well. But, put him in Cali playing for Kiffin does he get the invite to NY? I don't think so.
Ironically, ESPN begins a segment on Sportscenter on the award. Do they mention what he's accomplished on the field? No. They mention the number of Heisman's ND has along with how long it's been since they've had a player win won.

BTW, college football player of the year/Walter Camp Award? Perfect for Te'o. Which is why he won...

Well said, TerryP. You just succinctly summed up what I have been thinking re: the Te'o hype, only in a much more articulate and intelligent manner :tennis:

Like, I definitely think Te'o is a good player and he seems to be an equally good guy, but he has not carried his team like Manziel and Klein have. I don't much care who wins the Heisman since, obviously, we lack one of our guys in the race, but I truly want Manziel or Klein to win for what they have done for their programs this year. They aren't the sexy choice or the choice the media is drooling over, but they are the best choices.
