Fans have accused other programs of cheating for a long time in college football. But it now looks like one former Auburn coach actually did cheat, in the form of playing players.
In a story written by Matt Hayes of Bleacher Report, former Auburn coach Terry Bowden said that he paid off Auburn players that were being paid by the previous coaching staff.
Hayes writes that when he was one day visiting Bowdenās house he found a black ledger filled with names of players who needed to be paid.
āBowden told the assistant coach, āPay off the players that were promised and never do it again,'ā Hayes wrote.
No specific players or dollar amounts were noted by Hayes or Bowden in the article.
Bowden, the son of Florida State legend Bobby Bowden, took over for former Auburn coach Pat Dye after the 1992 season. Auburn was already on NCAA sanctions. Terry Bowden went 47-17-1 in his time at Auburn and was fired halfway through the 1998 season. He is now the head coach at Akron.
This isnāt the first time Auburn has been accused of cheating. Rather famously, there were allegations that Cam Newtonās father sought money for his sonās services, specifically Mississippi State, but Auburn was cleared of any wrong doing by the NCAA. Newton led Auburn to a national championship and won the Heisman Trophy in his one year at Auburn.
The Tigers went 8-4 this season under Gus Malzahn. They are likely candidates to play in the Sugar Bowl.
