Big Andre has been suspended for the Sugar Bowl.

Official Press Release from Coach Saban:

Coach Nick Saban said:
"Andre Smith has been suspended from participating in the Sugar Bowl due to a violation of team rules and policies. The University of Alabama, the team and the football program are more important than any individual player. Everyone on our team depends on each other to be responsible, to make good choices and decisions relative to their actions.

Andre Smith has done an outstanding job in our program as a person, student and a player and we will do all we can as an institution to support him in all future endeavors.

Our priority and focus as a team is to play the best football game of the season in this Sugar Bowl, and to support our players to overcome any adversity this unfortunate situation has created."

I just got a txt that A Smith has been suspended...

I get text messages from al.com regarding 'Bama stuff like scores or certain news making events AND...

I just got a text that Andre Smith has been suspended for the Sugar Bowl :( but no reason given...

Can anyone offer any REAL feedback on this OR has al.com gone nuts again?

 awww man wtf!?? that's the last thing we needed. D@mn it Dre..... ;sh
Just seems so unlike him. Oh well. they don't call it Burbon st. for nothing ya know.

So next quetsion: Who's replacing him?

I guess Andre was more worried about the almighty dollar than the team he is STILL playing for. Oh well, who'll be taking his spot if Terry or anyone else can say?

I'll say this: if it's a personal conduct violation, I just gained a whole new level of respect for Saban. It takes some serious cojones to suspend an all-american for a game like this.

Is his back-up any good, or do you even know that? Can't imagine he's got many reps.

WTF Alabama?

Not jumping to conclusions about what may have happened with Smith, but.....

It was reported here that Saban had implemented a 2am curfew for his players. Is it just me, or does it seem like you're just asking for trouble with a 2am curfew in New Orleans of all places. Around here some have a saying that "the Holy Ghost goes to bed at midnight" (even though there's others that actually believe he goes to bed sometime between 10:30 and 11:00pm....but I digress).

In all seriousness, this is really not good news....and I don't just mean for you guys. For as many chuckles as what I'm about to say might garner from the more arrogant and ignorant among you (I'm not assuming anything), we want you at full strength and were really looking forward to the Smith/Kruger matchup.

On the bright side, if whatever he did really did warrant Saban's decision, then Kudos to Saban.

Who is the #2 at that position?

Thats a shame there  :( What an ending to an outstanding college career. I wonder if he KNOWINGLY did something wrong...or if he unknowingly got caught up in something...Regardless, gotta respect CNS's position.

That speaks volumes about what is expected by Saban of his players. Would any other coach do this? Not many.

^^^I agree. Again, I am so glad we have CNS!
If he would of been allowed to play, probably would of broken some NCAA violations.

This definitely takes some wind out of my sails for the Sugar Bowl but 1 man does not make up the team. I hope the best for Smitty but this sucks for his character. I hope his NFL stock does not go down for this.

When he was hurt this year it was David Ross that came off the bench.

We are probably looking at Johnson working at LT and Ross playing LG.

Its probably the fact that CNS trust our players and expects them to behave as adults, hence the 2am cufew. Lets say what 85 traveled?? Which would mean that 84 acted appropriately?? I'll take that and also a coach who sticks by his word and punishes the best player on the the team.
