'There's something brewing, something good'

AUBURN – Auburn players see it and feel it. So does head coach Gus Malzahn. There’s a different vibe to this spring, and they say it is a sign of a team that has come together in pursuit of a common goal as they arrive at spring break after five days of practice.

For junior center Austin Golson and sophomore H-back Chandler Cox, it brings back memories of the joyful days of high school football.

“I would say it feels different,” Golson said. “It feels like when I was in high school and we won the state championship - people flying around and having confidence in what they are doing. I don’t think anybody is dreading practice.

“Last year we had guys saying “I can’t wait for spring break.” Today I was like “We can’t wait to get out there and practice, then we’ll worry about spring break.” I think that means a lot. I really like where we are.”

Cox said the feeling is there in the tough times on the field, off the field, throughout the program.

“When I was in high school you could feel it, and it was a good feeling,” Cox said. “That’s how I feel this year. It’s totally different than it was last year. I don’t know what it is. I don’t think anyone knows yet. But there’s something brewing, something good.”

Malzahn has said from the first day of spring practice that he was pleased with the energy his players were showing. And he said Thursday it’s only gotten better.

“Overall, I think every one of our guys wants to be coached,” Malzahn said. They are responding to their coaches and playing with great energy and having fun. They aren’t out there just dreading it. They are trying to get better, and that is what excites me.”

Junior defensive end Carl Lawson, who contemplated leaving for the NFL, said what he’s experience this spring has been unlike any other.

“It does feel different - a lot more energy, a lot more leadership,” Lawson said. “That’s something I’ve been trying to do myself with a bunch of other guys on the team. Every good team needs leaders, and it actually needs somebody to embrace that role. I feel like we have a lot of guys on the team that are trying to be leaders and trying to embrace that role. There’s a lot of energy.

“There’s no coming out there, like, ‘Oh, spring practice.’ I’m excited. That’s something (in spring practice) I haven’t had since I’ve been here. There’s been a lot of energy, and I’m real excited about it.”

Lawson said the Tigers have much to do as they head toward next season and an opportunity to make amends for last season’s 7-6 finish.

“We just have a lot of stuff to clean up, but I will say this: I love the energy we have in spring practice,” Lawson said. “It’s fun. That’s something I haven’t had since I’ve been here. I hope it carries over into next season, but that’s what I really like about this spring.”it woul

Auburn players will have 11 days off before returning to the practice field on March 22. Malzahn said he it is important that they return ready to work again.

“We’ve really challenged our guys to, over spring break, keep their cardio, to work on their own,” Malzahn said. “We’ll come back and have 10 practices. They will be very important practices. We’ll really start tackling. So far, most of what we’ve done is just thud. When we come back, our guys should have a foundation offensively and defensively to start scrimmaging and tackling.

“Overall, I’m excited for our guys and excited with our effort and energy.”

homer fluff piece imo.
It's their MO, riz. AL.com picks it right up. You can't tell me they don't have walking/marching orders.

AUBURN | Gus Malzahn can sense it. So can his players. This is a spring practice like none they’ve experienced before.

“It does feel different. A lot more energy and a lot more leadership,” junior defensive end Carl Lawson said. “That's something this spring that I haven't had since I've been here. There's been a lot of energy and I'm excited about it.”

Malzahn has commented on his team’s energy and focus throughout the first five practices. Turns out that may have been more than the usual coach speak.

Malzahn said the change is especially evident on the defensive side of the ball.

“We have a chance to be pretty good on defense. You can just sense it and you can tell it feels different out there from a defensive standpoint,” he said.

According to Lawson, part of that is due to new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele along with a spirited couple of months of winter workouts.

“I like Coach Steele’s coaching style,” Lawson said. “He’s making us put in effort without having to do all the screaming and stuff. When we got that, I honestly feel it makes us want to compete.

“I feel like another thing carrying over is in our offseason drills, we had pretty much a lot of guys who are competing in the morning workouts. I think that carried over and definitely translates into the spring. Everybody just wants to go out there and compete.”

Even the offensive players can sense a difference on the other side of the ball.

“I don’t know much about their scheme and stuff, but I do know that they’ve been flying around and having more energy than since I’ve been here,” Golson said. “They’re excited. They love Coach. They love what he’s doing. They’re excited to play for a new coach, a new year. They have tons of energy. That’s what we need.”

And it’s not just the defense. Golson said that energy and confidence has permeated the entire team. It’s a feeling he hasn’t felt since he was at Prattville High School in 2011.

“It feels different, like back when I was in high school, the year that we won the state championship,” Golson said. “With the energy. People flying around and having confidence in what we’re doing. I’ve really enjoyed practice. I don’t think anybody is dreading practice.

“Last year, I remember that we had some guys: ‘Man, I can’t wait until spring break.’ Nah, today we were like: ‘Man, I can’t wait to get out there and practice and then we can worry about spring break.’ I think that means a lot. I really like where we are.”

Chad Scott is as dumb as a brick! He must not know his fanbase very well. Those inbred goat humpers are obsessed with 1 game and 1 game only. Those hicks would be ecstatic with a 1-11 record if that lone victory comes at the end of November in the Iron Bowl.

I picked up my daughter at the airport yesterday from a spring break school trip. A guy and his teenage son were getting their bags, son had an Auburn hat and Auburn backpack on. The looked at me kinda weird after I gave them a Roll Tide. I absolutely love messing with them outside of Alabama.

i had to laugh at this part....

Auburn has the best video board in college football. Auburn has a stadium and game-day atmosphere as good as any in the nation. Auburn has had the best individual player and best team a few times. Auburn has the best fans. Why should we be satisfied with anything short of the best coach?

first, it tells me that they value a video board over everything else.

second, it tells me that they have no faith in their coach. you know, the one they love so much until someone else says he's the best they're gonna get.

it's sorta like the kid and his toys. the kid doesn't want to play with his toys until someone else does. well, they love their coach until someone says he's the best they're gonna get. then, they don't care for him all that much and get all pissy about it and say they deserve better.....better than the coach they love and say he's the best.

auburn, the fan-base that's an oxymoron unto itself.

but what do you expect from a culture that worships trees and toilet paper?

It's like they never learn. Or, maybe they have and realized they need to adapt a Karl Marx philosophy and give 'em an opiate each spring?

“Both of those guys have had times that they've made 'wow' plays,” Malzahn said. “They're veteran guys. The can make plays even when the system breaks down. I've seen it a few times already. I would say they're much improved from where they were last year, but, of course, that's normal for guys who have had experience for a year and they have an offseason and come back.”

Notice the difference, of course. Franklin has the wow factor, while Johnson and White have made wow plays at times.

Those inbred goat humpers are obsessed with 1 game and 1 game only
I meant to respond to this the other day but forgot to go back and count.

Two page article. On the second page there's five paragraphs with Alabama being mentioned in four for a total of seven times on the page. First page, Alabama mentioned four times.

But {repeat Auburn Creed here} and we're not obsessed with ...
