🏈 Alonzo Lawrence?

Anybody got any updates on how well Alonzo Lawrence is doing? As high as his stock jumped at the end of last year, I had great hope he could come in & contribute early. As much emphasis as Coach is putting on recruiting DB's this year, kinda makes me wonder if he's having trouble with learning the system, or what might be slowing his progress. Anybody close to the situation, or with any credible info?

He's done well on the Scout team this fall. He's been one of the guys that has been mentioned by the 1's when talking about players that have "stuck out." (Matchett being an example of another)

Redshirt, which is understandable.

We'll see him on the field next season, but he'll be a "contributor" in '10. Next season, we'll lose Javy, Marquis and Chris Rogers.

So, in reality, in the spring of '10 we'll have Robby Green, Alonzo Lawrence and Kareem Johnson is we base that on who is playing CB right now. Names that I think will fall into that category include Kirkpatrick and Scott. Still, we'll need a couple of more able to contribute if called upon.

It's amazing if you look at the number of DB's recruited by the last staff and how we are fairly thin in that position. Heck, not real deep in our Safeties as well...but the move of Chris Jackson is going to help that out as well.

One note to add:

If you have noticed, in our conversations on the recruiting forum, when we've discussed some of the WR prospects we've noted that they have the ability to play DB as well. A good class (WR) in Feb. of '09 may lead to another move or two from O to D.

I would say it's been Alonzo's ability to absorb the system that led him to a redshirt. If you remember he was a borderline academic casualty and Saban runs an extremely complex system for his DBs. The fact that Javy really stepped it up didn't help either. I think we'll see him a bit next year but the staff is very high on Robby Green as well. In 2010 we will probably see Lawrence, Jackson and Kirkpatrick as starting corners (I'm assuming Lawrence passes up Green because I think he is more athletic). If Scott does indeed move to CB there will be nothing that will keep him off the field.

At safety we'll see Barron and Woodall IMO as the starters. I think Woodson could start as a freshman as the "roving safety" on some plays. He'll be one of the best run stoppers we'll have and absolutely DEADLY against receivers going over the middle. Between him and Barron we'll have 2 of the hardest hitting safeties in the country I bet. Woodson won't redshirt unless he gets hurt. He'll be a special teams warrior. Lester will play some clean up next year but probably won't be as much of a contributor til 2010 IMO.
