All these earthquakes

I'm listening to NPR, and a question came up about how frequent these earthquakes have become. They didn't stay with the question very long, but it made me think about all the major, destructive, loss of life quakes we've had in the past few years.

The 2004 quake in Sumatra and Indonesian tsunami and again in 2007.
Another big one near South Island, near New Zealand in 2007.
This recent quake in Haiti and the one last week in Chile.

These were some big mofos. All were 8.0 or better I believe. Are these things becoming more frequently for real, or is totally the fact that populations are larger and more concentrated, combined with instant and constant news confirmations?

Seems like we are in an active seismic pattern right now. Could this be the start of something bigger?
