Game is Jan. 27 in Mobile

Alabama's Rashaan Evans and Anthony Averett have been scratched from next week's Reese's Senior Bowl, executive director Phil Savage confirmed Thursday.

Evans, a linebacker, is considered a likely first-round draft pick in April. Though he dealt with a groin injury during the season, Evans is now healthy, Savage said. He opted to withdraw from the Senior Bowl "due to the length of the season and his desire to get prepared for the combine," Savage said.

Averett, a cornerback, suffered a sprained ankle getting off the bus prior to the Crimson Tide's Sugar Bowl game against Clemson on Jan. 1. He played with the injury in that game and in the College Football Playoff Championship Game against Georgia on Jan. 8.

"I was a little bit concerned when they accepted their invites if they would be able to fulfill their obligation of being here," Savage said. "With Rashaan ... he withdrew about a week ago. And then Anthony Averett, as it was reported, he stepped off the bus, turned his ankle in New Orleans, and then was able to make it through the Clemson game and the Georgia national championship game, but he's not 100 percent. So he withdrew right after the national championship game."

The withdrawal of Evans and Averett leaves five Alabama players in this year's Senior Bowl: center Bradley Bozeman, defensive end Da'Shawn Hand, linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton, cornerback Levi Wallace and punter JK Scott. Hamilton will not play in the Senior Bowl due to a knee injury suffered in November, but will participate in team interviews and other game week activities. Evans and Averett are not expected to be in Mobile next week.

Other players scratched from the 2018 Senior Bowl due to injury are Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph (foot), South Carolina linebacker Skai Moore (turf toe), Utah wide receiver Darren Carrington (ankle), Michigan defensive tackle Maurice Hurst (hamstring) and Memphis wide receiver Anthony Miller (ankle). Rudolph and Hurst are considered likely first-round NFL draft picks.

New players added to the Senior Bowl roster in recent days as of Thursday including LSU defensive linemen Greg Gilmore and Christian LaCouture, LSU running back Darrel Williams, Brown linebacker Dewey Jarvis, Central Florida tight end Jordan Akins, Jacksonville State defensive back Siran Neal and Nebraska quarterback Tanner Lee.

The 2018 Reese's Senior Bowl takes place Jan. 27 at Mobile's Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. on the NFL Network.

CLARIFICATION: Senior Bowl executive director Phil Savage initially indicated Evans withdrew from the Senior Bowl due to injury. However, after conferring with Evans' agent, noted that Evans in now healthy and withdrew from the game due to the length of Alabama's title run.
