🏀 Alabama vs Longwood

11% from 3 point land, 19 turnovers against a very weak opponent.

My brother was giving me updates, I didn’t watch. Said we looked very athletic but struggled shooting. A lot of new faces. Pretty sloppy in spells.

Only 1 game, but team definitely has more athleticism, more length. Guys looked like they were engaged on defense which was nice. 4 guys with 10+ rebounds, including Sears. They were COLD from 3 (like most of last season), but I'm not worried about that yet. Some silly turnovers, but I think some of it was rust (especially from Burnett who made some bad passes). Also, in the first few games under Oats, it always seems like turnovers are up a bit as they adjust to pace and settle in. Really like the young guys, shouldn't be hard to find a solid rotation of players before long, especially when Quinerly gets back in a few weeks. Also, Dom Welch was held out (hurt), so looking forward to seeing him as well. Liberty will offer a tougher challenge Friday night...

Where are you 321? Looks like our BB team is off to a pretty good start so far. Not a strong opponent, but our guys are looking good.
I was unable to watch the game unfortunately. It's been a minute since I've been unable to watch the opening game, but my best friend had a baby, so I missed the action.

I've got it recorded, so I'll be able to watch it. Very stoked to see how well we played defensively.

My simplistic view is that the Oats system is built on feast or famine. That is why the Defense must be elite to manage through the famine. Just looke at basic statistics, the long ball does not fall as often. If you can get in that upper 30/40% it works well when you fall below that the D better show up big time. If the D is not elite they will not be able to play through those slumps.

I guess you could say this about any offensive scheme but it just feels like there is naturally less consistency with this offensive scheme.

It also seemed like teams started playing the passing lanes last year when someone drove into the lane and wanted to pass it back out.

Lawd I wish Alabama would outlaw the kick out pass. The completion percentage was lower than our 3 point percentage.

Got around to watching the game. The turnovers kill me. Oats did state at halftime and in the post game that the staff will work on getting them lowered, because a lot were unforced.

Positives:

-Our length and defense look 10 times better than last year. Miller, Pringle, Clowney, and Bediako (he particularly had a great game) were all active on the boards. Pringle's vertical is insane.

-Rylan Griffen looks way better than I expected. I somewhat was wondering if he'd be like Miles in his first season and only see PT in garbage time. But he showed great energy on D, good handles, and I believe he'll end up being the "go-to" guy from beyond the arc. Yeah he only made one, but he definitely has the best stroke on the team and had a few go halfway down and back up. A much improved player to Shack. He was +23 in plus/minus.
-We have multiple guys who have above average handles. Miller, Sears, Griffen, and Bradley all look capable of running point. Once Quinerly returns, we'll have five guys who will able to get blow bys, increase paint touches, and facilitate.
-Defense and energy were great. Can't be said enough. Our length is going to create a lot of fast break opportunities.

Negatives:

-Our transition offense needs work. Some of it will be fixed with better chemistry, but the careless turnovers have got to stop. We had numbers on multiple times last night on fast-break opportunities, just to stupidly throw the ball out of bounds. I think we try to play too fast sometimes and it gets to the players.
-Miles and Gurley look like odd men out. Not sure if they're dealing with injuries, but they did not look good.
-Off ball movement needs to be instilled. Too much of just one guy running point with the ball, and everyone standing around. Not sure how a team that plays fast doesn't have more motion. I know Oats doesn't like to run many sets, so maybe this is why.
-My only complaint defensively is how many times Longwood got the ball in the low post. This has been an issue of mine with Charlie Henry's D.

Overall, I was pleased. We got a good team folks.
