šŸˆ Alabama running game issues

I pulled this from a poster on SecRant Alabama board and the poster is BhamBama. He shared some interesting perspective.

Warning it's long post..

2Q, 7:04 | 1st & 10
LSU with 8 in the box; UA with 7 blockers (2 TE)
Riley shotgun right; inside run to left; 4-yard gain
Pretty well blocked by 4/5. RG (77) blocks nobody and what could have been a 10+ yard gain ends up being 4 yards. Note - Riley hits the hole MUCH faster than either Miller or Hill.

3Q, 7:26 | 1st & 10
LSU with 9 in the box; UA with 8 blockers (1 TE, 2 WR bunched left)
Miller shotgun left; toss left; 2-yard gain
OL does a decent job with the exception of 56, pulling to lead the way, not really blocking anyone; 80 got blown up by the DE 44 and that kind of ruined the play honestly. WR blocking on outside wasn’t great either, so even if 80 holds up better you’re probably only looking at 2-3 more yards.

3Q, :21 | 1st & 10
LSU with 8 in the box; UA with 7 blockers (2 TE - one set as FB)
Hill in the I-formation; delayed counter inside right; 1-yard gain
Not much to say really; safety and linebacker on backside of the play come unblocked and both are there to blow it up. Once again the slow-developing nature of the play allows guys off the ball to get into the backfield, and we just don’t have the numbers advantage to pick them up.

4Q, 10:28 | 1st & 10
LSU with 8 in the box; UA with 7 blockers (2 TE)
Hill shotgun right; inside handoff left; 3-yard gain
Line working left; 77 engages the DT but then passes him off to 75, who is not there. Result - DL meeting Hill at LOS. Just sloppy work by the RG & RT. Unblocked read man on end of LOS for LSU was also there, but did not commit until Ty gave it, so read was fine. Honestly chance for a decent hitting play here if we block the DT. The left side had blocked it up well.

4Q, 9:33 | 1st & 10
LSU with 7 in the box; UA with 5 blockers (1 TE inline released to an RPO route)
Hill shotgun left; inside handoff right; 1-yard gain
Formation actually gave us a good numbers look as both TEs to the left with a WR take several defenders that way; Unfortunately 56 & 72 get blown up by the nose, and we are unable to get a blocker to the off-ball backer to that side. He makes the play without being touched. The nose, 90, was also right there at contact despite being double teamed. Bad OL execution.

4Q, 7:11 | 1st & 10
LSU with 10 in the box; UA with 9 blockers (2 TE + 2 WR bunched tight)
Miller shotgun right; toss right; 1-yard loss
80 whiffs on a down block; result is 77 (pulling right to lead the way) picks up 80’s man instead of the safety, who comes untouched into the backfield for an easy tackle; theme establishing as I watch these - 80 does not do a good job of blocking in the run game

4Q, 3:05 | 2nd & 10
LSU with 8 in the box; UA with 7 blockers (2 TE)
Hill shotgun right; delayed inside handoff middle; 1-yard gain
LSU loading up on the run obviously based on situation; 81 gets blown up by the DE; 56 doesn’t handle the DT very well either, and the result is another poor run. Nobody really getting a lot of movement TBH.

4Q, 2:20 | 3rd & 9
LSU with 7 in the box; UA with 9 blockers (2 TE + WRs bunched)
Hill shotgun left; toss left; 7-yard gain
Well blocked for the most part; one of the few plays where the RB had any room to move; 74 didn’t hold his down block very well would be main complaint. If he holds it for a count longer the run probably goes for a 1st down as his man ends up primary in the tackle

My thoughts:
-We need to stop running balls on 1st down so much .

- we need to spread them out similar to what Tennessee does to open up the run game a little.

-TEs are not always consistent in blocking. Hopefully Lewis comes back will help.

-RBs aren't seeing the lane. We may need to go with Hill, Riley and Miller or give Dear a shot

Defense is in backfield as much as TY.

I see from ur post where they are just out numbering the oline.

But also see the RBs stop at los. Someone has to dominate their position.

Oklahoma HC n DC see this. It may be really ugly. Or uglier. Trying to run ball this weekend
It's scheme issues. If Defense out number OL and that would explains why we see TY change the plays so much at LOS. Then we may need to go empty set just to keep them honest.

I am old but as a player the story was you never run past a defender to get to another defender even though that might have been the design.

Looks like we need to tend to the defender right in front of us before we head down field to get to another.

JMO the TE coach isn't doing a very good job of teaching his guys to block. The effort isn't much week after week. Just a bunch of soft ass effort.

Coach Bryant would throw his keys on the desk like Nick did if he spent one hour at practice with today's players. His theory that a average player giving a 120% could find success vs a better player giving 80% effort would be tested for sure. I think you seldom see 80% effort consistently.

Ten Bears was wise to turn in his keys. I reckon so.

1. We are very slow getting off the ball.
2. Long developing run plays.
3. Jam dancing around too much.
4. Seldom run jumbo packages with an extra OL or H back.
5. Our OL does not block well and stay with the block.

What running game? All year I have said that the line doesn’t seem very strong. Rarely do you see an Alabama offensive lineman pushing a defensive lineman off the LOS. Look at the 4th down play where Ty tried to run. Absolutely no movement. And that’s not an aberration. That’s a trend. I also wonder if the blocking scheme is too complicated or cutesy or something. Because I see too many instances of tight ends trying to block defensive tackles or linemen trying to pull when a defender is nose up on them. It’s crazy.

Bad scheme it appears to me and then no attention to details. The first play of the game and we don't know who we block on the wide side where the ball carrier is going. That play had to be ran at least 20 times last week in practice.

After watching Jam, I think he is either still hurting from injuries or try to avoid getting hurt again.. He is inside his head.. I don't blame him if that is the case...Injuries and pain suck..

Injuries to the brain aka concussions, put a lot of thinking about CTE into one’s head. I believe he is running more timid since Mizzou.

I think that's 40 percent of the issue and if we could do that less, and do different varieties out of spread, I think it'll be little better.
I’m all for pistol formation with some stretch and just downhill runs with Hill and Riley. Feel like Jam needs a sit down with the team psychologist. At this point, I think he is in his head about his head and not just cutting it loose. I will say to his defense though, once you have one concussion, you do become more susceptible to them more frequently.
