Almost eight months will pass before Louisville opens its 2018 football season against the Alabama program that won the national championship last week, but for now, the Cardinals aren’t shy away from the challenge Sept. 1 in Orlando, Florida.

ā€œWe put our pads on like they put their pads on," Louisville cornerback Rodjay Burns said. "They’re not scary because they won the national championship. We’re gonna play ball.ā€

The Crimson Tide stunned Georgia in overtime last Monday to win their fifth national title in nine years, and Nick Saban’s program will almost certainly enter next season as one of the nation's top teams.

Barring attrition, Alabama has two potent quarterbacks, at least one former five-star running back and another elite defense returning.

ā€œIt’s a great challenge for us,ā€ Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said. ā€œGreat opener for us. It gives us a lot to work for in the offseason, a lot to work for all summer long.ā€

Petrino said he saw pretty much all of the national title game Monday and noticed the speed of both defenses.

Burns, an Ohio State transfer who will be eligible for that opener after sitting out the 2017 season, said he’s "going to take the attitude as, 'OK, they're another team.'"

ā€œWe put our pads on like they put their pads on. They’re not scary because they won the national championship.ā€

Louisville has made a habit of scheduling difficult openers, though none in recent memory have been as daunting as this one. The Cards played Purdue in another neutral-site matchup last September and opened against a highly rated Auburn team in 2015 in Atlanta.

Before 2014, Louisville often played Kentucky in its first game or one of its first few, and Petrino recalled how that motivated his team during his first tenure at the school from 2003-06.

The Alabama showdown, then, could provide an extra dose of that motivation.

ā€œTo me, it’s an opportunity to show the world where we stand going against the best,ā€ quarterback Jawon Pass said. ā€œSo we look forward to it.ā€

Purdue? in football? ....gotta be shittin' me....Almost coughed up my spleen on that one. :rolf::rolf::rolf:

Scam Newton hadn't played any meaningful minutes before his Heisman trophy year. Tua hadn't played any meaningful minutes before he led a team to a national title. I'm not saying that their new qb is the same caliber as these guys, but I am saying don't rule out players just because they're not household names yet. Remember, their backup was backing up a Heisman trophy winner, so of course he didn't play much.

Petrino's offense will definitely give us a good picture of what we have in the secondary (hope it ain't an ugly one). Not the ideal way to start with 5 new starters with minimal PT. Other hand, we should hang 50 on them with the offense we return.

All true, and you can take the $cam thing back even further to make your point. Back to when he was the back-up QB for Mullen and Myers at UF. Who the hell would have ever thought they had one better than Tebow waiting in the wings?

Trust me, I know who the kid backed up and I know that Bobby Petrino is stillthe HC. They lose 7-8 starters off of their defense that gave up 27+ points a game as well.
The kid that will be getting his first start is Jawon Pass, a kid from Carver HS in Columbus, GA. We recruited him as well. QBs making their first starts don't fair too well versus a CNS defense. I think we will be fine.

I don't see this game giving the team anything other than a snapshot of what the secondary will end up being. I do see a lot of people overreacting on a few plays. It's a "tradition unlike any other." And there have been so REALLY good ones over the years. Mark running the wildcat was probably the biggest.

I see this game as a good challenge for the secondary with their assignments. It'll be a teaching moment going into week two.

(Teaching moment: Bet dollars to donuts we hear that Saturday night and Sunday morning more than a dozen times.)

Its also gonna hurt Bama's strenghth of schedule as when we beat the brakes off them...by mid-season ESPN will be selling that Bama has yet to have a quality win as it did with FSU this season. I hate that when we schedule these games 3-4 years out the teams are in the top10. By the time we play them....they are back to irreverence.

yeah but then we play the one team that is always in the Top 10, Duke. Not! I wonder how they'll sell all those expensive tickets to that game?

Absolutely....will be an embarrassment to Bama with the empty seats....
Remember all the empty seats when they played at Duke....
And whenever you schedule Duke....its not going to be help on strength of schedule....and they aren't going to be top anything....
Be interesting to see what we get for the 2020....opener....

Duke at their crackerbox is still baffling but we did it and that's that. Giving them a rematch would make a lot of sense if we made it a true home and home series and they repaid the favor and we opened the season at BDS.
