šŸˆ Alabama, LSU go old school at QB

Rare BCS Championship Game without any prolific quarterback

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Drew Brees and Matthew Stafford will sling passes around the Superdome tonight in the NFL playoffs. Two nights later inside the same building, AJ McCarron and Jordan Jefferson will be asked not to during the BCS Championship Game.

These differing philosophies add an intriguing subplot to how quarterbacks can win -- or don't lose -- games. No NFL team has won a Super Bowl in the past seven years without a quarterback named Rodgers, Brees, Roethlisberger, Manning or Brady. But college went old school for its championship game this year.

Can't blame Nick Saban and Les Miles for asking their quarterbacks to be game managers. You would, too, if your defense was stocked with NFL talent.

Solomon makes a few decent points here. Well, makes a few decent observations, how's that?

Here's two that are polar opposites, well, sort of.

McCarron could become the first sophomore quarterback to win the national championship since Jay Barker with Alabama in 1992 while also surrounded by an elite defense. Freshmen and sophomores are 0-4 as quarterbacks in the BCS title game.

Along with...

Consider this: Every quarterback of a national championship team since 1990 has attempted at least 71 percent of his school's passes. Jefferson has thrown 33 percent of LSU's passes and Lee 64 percent.

OK, get this. Some of you guys will get it, I'm sure. :td:

We've attempted 323 passes this year. AJ has thrown a tad over 91% of those passes.

Setting that aside.

AJ has thrown five interceptions this year and two of those were in the first game. The other three were against SEC teams—UT, LSU and MSU—in games where he only threw one touchdown. He was running at around a 60% completion rate in those three games versus and throughout the rest of the season he was sniffing around 70%.

Did you know that AJ is currently ranked #20 in the nation in pass efficiency?

He's got his job and he does it well. In a sense, this might be comparing apples to oranges. But, ya know? Mark Barron does his job and does it well.

I mention that because of the supporting cast Mark as this year with the visions of the supporting cast AJ has next season.
