The season couldn't have started on a better note for Adam Griffith.

Starting for the first time, Alabama's kicker came up big in the season opener with West Virginia. Nailing all four kicks ― three from 40-plus yards ― Griffith was named SEC special teams player of the week.

He made his first seven kicks overall, but hit a rough patch in recent weeks. Missing four of his next five kicks, Griffith's only attempted one field goal in the last two games.

Alabama coach Nick Saban offered some insight into the situation Tuesday.

"He's got a little bit of a physical problem that I'm not going to talk about that we've had to manage, which has affected his ability to kick maybe in practice as much as he's used to," Saban said.

At Tennessee last week, Griffith became the first Alabama kicker to miss an extra point since Jeremy Shelley misfired late in the 2012 BCS Championship Game.

Griffith has still kicked every field goal and extra point this season. Punter JK Scottkicked off in his place seven times this season with five of those attempts coming two weeks ago against Texas A&M. But at Tennessee, Griffith booted all six kickoffs with three touchbacks.

"He's still hitting the ball well," Saban said. "He kicked off really well in the last game. I think he slipped on the extra point that he missed, but other than that I thought he did really well in the game."

All kickers are "head cases" to a degree!! They are a "special breed". Having some back issues will limit you ALOT when it comes to kicking. Think of the torque you must generate with your torso to get the power in your kicks. I imagine that he has been on a pitch count this week at practice.

Did his kicking issues begin a few games ago? No, I think he's a head case personally. Just my opinion.

A few games ago is when it was obvious to the fans (ie, JK Scott on kickoffs). He didn't miss a FG until the 4th game of the season, he was 7 for 7 the first 3 games. Obviously this could be mental, but the fact that he's not doing kickoffs speaks to something other than mental.

No but whats going on "between his ears" can make him miss 30 yard field goals and extra points...
[HIDE]as will the back issue...its the muscle that runs along the spine, you can feel it if you try...just under the rib cage and above the hip...don't know the name and I'm not looking it up[/HIDE]

I do not know what exactly is going on, but I can guess. He missed the 57-yard field goal against Auburn last year, and Auburn returned the missed FG for the winning touchdown. And that play was shown over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. I think that damaged his confidence.

If that were the case I don't that no he would have started out the year on such a hot streak.
