They've got more quality wins than us, Georgia, OSU, Clemson, OK. At least in my opinion. looking at Oregon, Miss State and A&M wins. I know the polls are based on more than just current wins, obviously.
Oregon is the only win I'd call quality and that's a question left to be answered.
As an example, let's look at last season with LSU. They had a "quality win" for the first six weeks of the season by defeating Miami in week one. Then, we had a stretch where they dropped four in a row finishing with five losses on the season. I believe that was in week seven.
Was it a quality win in December? Nope, just a win against a named brand.
Back to Auburn and MIssissippi State. AU's first three touchdown drives started on MSU's side of the field. I think their longest drive was 47 yards. They had 28 on the board with less than 200 yards of offense. MSU, shooting themselves in the feet, gave Auburn a big head up in that game.
When people complain about preseason polls it's here and now they have a point. We're getting a feel for teams by week five but we're also getting the narrative about "quality wins" when there's still too much left in the season.
...polls are based on more than just current wins,
Brand name bias comes into play, a lot.
Oregon is getting a lot of love, statistically, because of their ranking in total offense. Of course, never mind that 1200 of their 1800 yards put up came against Montana and Nevada...Montana, FCS school.
Bama being #1 this week can also be attributed to brand bias. However, in this case, this brand has a decades worth of proof it deserves said bias.
Personally, I'm still seeing Auburn as an 8-4 team. That's likely still a top 25 ranking at the end of the year. But, like mentioned in this thread about A&M, Bama beating a 8-3 team to close out the season won't be looked at as a quality win. It'll be "such a soft schedule."
