Saw were Coach Saban is doing some video teleconferences with recruits, good move, especially since he cannot go visist in person, just hope it is legal with the NCAA, hopefully the compliance department cleared it first, cause you know some barners will be screaming for violations.

Just something for you to file away before the accusations start...

Coaching Staff Member Contacting Prospect through Video Conference: (I) The NCAA Division I Management Council used its authority set forth in NCAA Constitution 5.4.1.2.1.5 to reverse a previous Council-approved official interpretation and agreed that it is permissible for an institution's coaching staff member to engage in face-to-face contact with a prospect via video conference, provided such contact counts as a recruiting contact and occurs during a permissible contact period. [References: NCAA Bylaws 13.4.2 (video/audio materials) and 13.02.3 (contact)]

I think it's considered the same thing as a phone call. This will probably change next year though (just a guess).

Are they going to change the rules every year to try can cripple Saban as a recruiter?

This is crazy.

Here's the thing that strikes me as amazing.

A coach is limited to one phone call to a recruit but a recruit can call a staff as many times as they want to...so, if Ming logs on to the web addy and talks with Saban he's the one that initiated the contact, not Saban.

Brilliant!! I can't tell you how much I get a kick out of this and how much it impresses me. Absolutely brilliant!!!

I wonder if the ncaa will look upon this as sidesteping their rule? Maybe even thumbing a nose at them? Obviously I'm gunshy about the whole recruiting /ncaa thing.
Terry or anyone else that could shed a little bit more light on it, is it possible to explain in a little more detail as to how it works and your opinions to how the ncaa may react?
Thanks.

It's a rule already on the books with the NCAA. The way it's worded is if the there is contact with a recruit via videoconference it's counted as the one phone call that is allowed in this evaluation period.

I got out of the business of predicting how the NCAA will react over a decade ago. But, in this case, there isn't a damn thing there for them to react to. It's in their rules, it's permissible contact, and it was a smart move by the staff. When he talked with Ming, Ming's coach said it was the first time he'd seen a coach do something like this. The high school coach was extremely impressed...as was Ming.

Thanks Terry. One thing that I'm wondering is how does this thing get set up ,equiptment wise and does a Bama staff member have to go to the school and set it up?
I guess that is what I'm more confused about than anything else. Would that particular contact ,if said coach is at the school setting up the epuiptment ,in violation for accidental contact?
Can these students initiate the teleconference whenever he wants, as many times, or is it the one phone call type thing and no more contact?

In this case, the high school already had a distance learning center set up. All Cignetti did was give Ming a web address to log on to and presto...it's done.

As to accidental contact, the assistant coaches are allowed on the road now...it's the spring evaluation period. They are allowed as many as two contacts. One, on the academic side, the second on the evaluation of their athletic abilities. If, they meet a kid and see them work out and check on their academics on the same day the visit is ruled an academic visit which allows the coach to return and evaluate them again.

I don't know if this counts as the one phone call the HC can make...it seems, based on the logic test, if Ming was the one that logged on to the site it would have been Ming initiating the contact. He can call the staff/contact the staff as much as he likes. There is no limit on that. Just like the dead period. If a recruit contacts the staff that's fine...we can't contact them, but they can contact the staff as often as they like.

Cool, thanks again Terry. Nailed my question perfectly.
Very slick move. This guy is always a step ahead. Lets hope it stays that way. No wonder he closes big.

I agree. I'm willing to bet that if we have a NO.1 class again next year, they'll change that rule too. It's just amazing how the previous rule was never a problem till Saban got the best class in the nation. Is it safe to say that people are having flashbacks of Bama being the jugernaut of the country?

Flashback isn't the word I'd use. More like our wet dream is going to be the rest of the football world's worst nightmare
