Is there a rule in place that you can not play in the title game if you did not win your conf.? Seems like I remember something like that after Oklahoma played LSU even though they lost in the Big 12 Champ. game.

There is not a rule in place that would stop this from happening, though I think there should be. It's been a controversy ever since Nebraska failed to make the Big 12 championship game in 2001, yet still played for the National Title. How can you be the third best team in your conference, but the second best in the country?

Not making the conference championship game doesn't automatically mean that you are the third best team in the conference. There are plenty of instances of the second place team in the West/East being much better than the first place team on the other side.

And right now, Georgia is playing as well as any team in the conference. Technically, they tied for the East, but lost the head to head with Tennessee for the tiebreaker. I would take Georgia in a rematch.
