Leading Off
  • Alabama and the College of Charleston will meet for the fourth time in series history when the two teams square off on Friday evening to begin this weekend's series at The Ballpark at Patriots Point.
  • The Crimson Tide and Cougars squared off for a weekend series back from March 5-7, 2010, with UA claiming a 2-1 series victory. Alabama won games one and two before falling in the series finale.
  • Alabama has faced four of the current nine member teams in the Colonial Athletic Association, maintaining a 7-1 record in those contests. The Tide holds a 3-0 mark against Northeastern, a 2-1 record against Charleston and is 1-0 against Elon and Towson. UA has never paired with Delaware, Hofstra, James Madison, UNC-Wilmington and William & Mary.
  • Alabama returns Tyler Ras to the mound on Friday as the junior righty makes his second start of the season. Ras will be followed by Dylan Smith, a right-hander, on Saturday with sophomore lefty Antoine Jean making the Sunday start.
  • College of Charleston will send a left-hander to the mound on Friday in Jordan Carr. The Cougars then look to a pair of freshmen right-handers, first with Ty Good on Saturday followed by Caswell Smith in the series finale.
About Alabama
  • Alabama heads to Charleston riding a four-game winning streak. The Crimson Tide swept Wright State across a three-game series at Sewell-Thomas Stadium this past weekend before cruising past Troy on Wednesday in Tuscaloosa.
  • The Crimson Tide offense posted six runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach early against Troy. Alabama's bats produced nine runs on a season-high tying 12 hits, including three home runs.
  • Alabama's home runs came from Peyton Wilson, Sam Praytor and Zane Denton. Wilson's homer led off the game with Praytor and Denton going back-to-back in the Tide's huge third inning.
  • Eight of the nine starters recorded at least one hit against the Trojans with T.J. Reeves leading the team in that category thanks to a perfect 3-for-3 effort that included a double, one run and walk.
  • Not to be outdone were the Alabama pitchers. Starter Connor Shamblin combined with William Freeman to allow only one run on five hits with no walks against the Trojans. Shamblin picked up his first win of the season with Freeman recording the save.
  • Tyler Ras put together an impressive start on Friday and the Tide paired his performance with three home runs to down Wright State, 8-4, in the series opener. Ras made the start in place of Connor Prielipp and didn't skip a beat. The junior tossed a career-long 6.0 innings, allowing only one run on one hit with two walks and five strikeouts. He retired 13 of the final 15 batters he faced before exiting the game after the sixth.
  • The offense gave Ras a cushion early with Wilson homering to lead off Friday's game. The bats then added two in the second and three in the fourth to widen the gap. Wilson was joined by Denton and Reeves, who each added a homer of their own.
  • Alabama completed the sweep of Wright State thanks to two wins in Saturday's doubleheader. The Crimson Tide won game one, 8-7, in 11 innings before coming away with a 1-0 victory in the nightcap.
  • William Hamiter sent a single over the head of the WSU left fielder to help Alabama walk off the Raiders, 8-7, in 11 innings in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
  • Alabama got out front early with two runs in the first and another pair in the third, but the Raiders did not lay down, chipping away at the lead and eventually taking a two-run advantage. The Tide then posted two runs in the home half of the eighth to tie things up and eventually send the game to extras. The offense was able to load the bases in the 11th with Hamiter delivering the walkoff single for UA.
  • The Tide's arms were solid despite what the scoreboard said as Antoine Jean, Jacob McNairy and Chase Lee combined to allow just two earned runs across 11.0 innings of work. Jean, who started, tossed 4.2 innings allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks with five punchouts. McNairy then contributed 4.1 frames of two-run baseball (none earned) with four strikeouts while Lee worked the final 2.0 innings, using the strikeout to record four of his six outs for the win.
  • Praytor's RBI-double in the bottom of the sixth was all the Crimson Tide needed as UA completed the sweep of the Raiders with a 1-0 win in game two of the day.
  • The nightcap featured strong pitching performances from both sides. Alabama's starter Dylan Smith was electric in game two, striking out a career-high seven across 5.2 scoreless frames. He was followed by Green, who tossed 1.1 innings with three strikeouts for his second win of the season.
About College of Charleston
  • College of Charleston wrapped up the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign at 12-2 in the midst of a six-game winning streak. The Cougars' record was highlighted by series wins over Youngstown State and Xavier along with a single victory against then-No. 21 Clemson.
  • The Cougars are led by former South Carolina head coach Chad Holbrook. A 1994 graduate of North Carolina, Holbrook's staff is made up of associate head coach Kevin Nichols and assistant coach Will Dorton along with volunteer assistant Danny Wondrack.
  • College of Charleston was selected to finish second in the Colonial Athletic Association in the conference's preseason poll, as voted on by the member head coaches.
On Deck
Alabama returns home to begin a five-game homestand, first with South Alabama on Tuesday, March 9. The Crimson Tide and Jaguars are set for a 6 p.m. start on SEC Network in UA's first nationally televised game of 2021. The Tide returns to the field the very next day for game two of the home-and-home with Jacksonville State, first pitch set for 6 p.m. on SEC Network+.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Tyler Ras put together another solid start, helping Alabama baseball blank the College of Charleston, 8-0, on Friday evening at The Ballpark at Patriots Point. The win moved UA to 9-1 on the young season and 3-0 in series openers during the 2021 campaign.

Ras (2-0) got the Friday night start for a second straight week. The junior capitalized on the opportunity once again, totaling a career-high six strikeouts and allowing only three hits with no walks across 6.0 innings. He was followed by Jacob McNairy, who contributed 2.0 frames, and then Grayson Hitt with 1.0 inning of scoreless baseball to complete the shutout. It was Alabama's second shutout effort this season.

The Crimson Tide offense received contributions from its entire lineup on Friday. All nine starters reached base safely on the night with eight of the nine starters recording one run apiece. Peyton Wilson and Caden Rose each homered and posted two RBI each with William Hamiter also contributing two RBI. Hamiter was Alabama's leader in hits with a 3-for-4 effort and one run scored to go with his two RBI.

From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"Tonight was the first time that we focused and competed at a high level for an entire nine innings. It was a really complete game for us; we were outstanding in all three facets of the game – pitching, defense and offense. I'm excited to see if we have the collective maturity to string a few efforts like this together starting tomorrow."

How It Happened
  • T3 | Peyton Wilson sent a solo home run over the wall in left to push UA out front early. The Tide then proceeded to load the bases with three walks before a two-out single from William Hamiter brought in two more. (3-0, Alabama)
  • T6 | Zane Denton doubled with one down before a Hamiter grounder resulted in a fielding error, putting the pair on the corners. Jackson Tate followed with a sacrifice bunt to bring in Denton from third and widen the gap. (4-0, Alabama)
  • T7 | Caden Rose led the inning off with his first career home run. (5-0, Alabama)
  • T8 | The Tide posted three runs on three hits and an error in the eighth to add to the lead. Hamiter singled to start the inning and was followed by a single from Tate. With two on, Jim Jarvis laid down a bunt single and an errant throw from Charleston allowed the runners to move up 90 feet, scoring one. A 4-3 groundout by Rose scored one more with Wilson sending a sac fly to right in the next at-bat for the inning's final run. (8-0 Alabama)
Postgame Notes
  • Alabama pitchers recorded their second shutout the season. The Tide also blanked Wright State in game two of last Saturday's doubleheader. That game lasted 7.0 innings.
  • Tyler Ras matched his career-long outing with 6.0 frames in tonight's game. That 6.0 innings ties the junior's effort last weekend against Wright State on Feb. 26.
  • Ras recorded a career-high six strikeouts in the game. His previous high for Ks was five which he had on three occasions, most recently in last weekend's start against the Raiders.
  • The Crimson Tide posted double-digit hits for the third time this season, all three of which have come in the last five games.
  • All nine of Alabama's starters reached base safely at least once on the night.
  • Alabama has recorded two-or-more home runs in seven of 10 games this season, including four two-homer games after this evening's series opener.
  • Peyton Wilson homered in back-to-back games, pairing tonight's home run with his leadoff shot against Troy on Wednesday. Wilson becomes the third Tide player to homer in back-to-back games this season, joining Zane Denton and Owen Diodati who each homered from Feb. 20-21 against McNeese.
  • Sam Praytor finished 1-for-4 on the night to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Across that time, the Tide catcher is batting .250 (7-28) with three doubles, two home runs, seven RBI, four runs and four walks.
  • Jim Jarvis extended his hitting streak to six games thanks to his 1-for-4 effort in tonight's game. The sophomore is batting .316 (6-19) with a double, two RBI, three runs, a walk and two hit-by-pitch across the current streak.
Alabama will go for the series win over the College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Tide will look to junior righty Dylan Smith in the start while the Cougars counter with freshman right-hander Ty Good. Saturday's matchup is scheduled for a 1 p.m. CT first pitch with the game streaming through FloSports.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite a strong outing from starter Dylan Smith, Alabama baseball was unable to secure the win against the College of Charleston in a 1-0 ballgame on Saturday afternoon at The Ballpark at Patriots Point. The loss moves the 23rd-ranked Crimson Tide to 9-2 on the season.

Smith (0-1) was impressive in his start for a second straight week but did not get the win once again. The junior improved upon his career-best totals from a week ago to set new career-high marks for innings and strikeouts. Smith allowed just one run on four hits with no walks and 10 punchouts but his offense was unable to provide the necessary assistance.

The Tide was shut out for the first time this season but had opportunities to score in the game. Alabama placed a runner in scoring position in five separate innings but stranded a season-high tying 13 runners on the day. The Crimson Tide's best chance came with one down and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, but a lineout and a strikeout ended the Tide threat.

From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"Tough loss today. Dylan Smith was outstanding and gave us a great chance to win. With the wind blowing in, we just couldn't keep the ball out of the air enough consistently. We had plenty of chances. We continue to be incredibly inefficient offensively, and until we improve situationally, we are going to have difficulty scoring when we don't hit home runs."

How It Happened
  • B2 | The Cougars hit a solo home run to gain the advantage. (1-0, College of Charleston)
Postgame Notes
  • Dylan Smith set a new Alabama season-high and his own career-high for innings pitched with 7.0. His previous career-best mark of 5.2 innings came last weekend against Wright State in game two of the doubleheader on Feb. 27.
  • Smith set a career-high total for strikeouts with 10 in today's contest. The 10 Ks are the most by an Alabama pitcher since Connor Prielipp punched out 11 last season against Lipscomb on March 6. Smith's previous career-best strikeout total was seven last weekend against the Raiders.
  • Sam Praytor finished 1-for-3 on the day to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Across that time, the Tide catcher is batting .258 (8-31) with three doubles, two home runs, seven RBI, four runs and six walks.
  • Jim Jarvis extended his hitting streak to seven games thanks to his 2-for-3 effort. The sophomore is batting .364 (8-22) with a double, two RBI, three runs, two walks, a pair of hit-by-pitch and a stolen base across the current streak.
  • Peyton Wilson's hitting streak came to an end at five games. During the streak, Wilson batted .350 (7-20) with three home runs, six RBI, six runs, three walks and a pair of stolen bases.
Alabama and the College of Charleston will meet on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. CT to decide the series. The Crimson Tide calls on left-hander Antoine Jean while the Cougars counter with Caswell Smith, a righty. Game three of the series will be streamed live through FloSports.

Bama loses 1-0. Tide had 9 hits, walked 5 times. Left 13 on base. Had bases loaded with 1 out in the 7th, got nothing. One of those days...
How do you dress when's it's 50° outside, windy, and a wet mist in the air all the time? Friday night was a little chilly but you could get out of the wind. Yesterday? In my eyes, it wasn't a fan friendly event. (And as a caveat, I don't deal with cold.)

I don't mind the cold, but not a fan of the wind when it's cold. I'd rather it be 35 and no wind than 55 and windy.

Alabama came back from a shutout on Saturday to post 21 runs on a season-high 20 hits

CHARLESTON, S.C. – No. 23 Alabama baseball downed the College of Charleston, 21-3, in Sunday's series finale at The Ballpark at Patriots Point. The victory on getaway day clinched the series for the Crimson Tide and moved UA's overall record to 10-2.

The Crimson Tide bounced back from a shutout on Saturday to score a season-high 21 runs, the most by an Alabama offense since 2019. Owen Diodati and Sam Praytor tied for the team lead with four RBI apiece while Will Patota and Andrew Pinckney were close behind with three each. Diodati's four came on a grand slam while Praytor delivered a single and a bases-clearing double for his four as the foursome accounted for 14 of the Tide's 20 RBI.

Alabama's bats produced a season-high 20 hits and saw 13-of-14 players in the game record at least one hit. Leading the way was Pinckney, who finished 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, a walk and a hit-by-pitch to go with his three RBI in his first career start.

Antoine Jean (1-0) highlighted the Alabama effort on the mound. The Crimson Tide starter picked up his first win of the season with 5.0 scoreless innings. He allowed just three hits and issued two walks while punching out four across his 68 pitches.

From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"I'm very pleased with the way we responded today. Thirteen different players got at least one hit, and it was great to see us score 17 runs that weren't all the result of a home run. Hopefully, we can build off today's effort and carry this offensive momentum into next week."

How It Happened
  • T2 | Owen Diodati drew a four-pitch walk and was followed by a single from Andrew Pinckney. Jim Jarvis delivered in the next at-bat, singling up the middle to score Diodati from second for the first run of the day. (1-0, Alabama)
  • T3 | Alabama's offense exploded for 10 runs to put the game out of reach. Peyton Wilson began the inning with a walk and William Hamiter joined him on base with a liner to center that was misplayed by the Charleston defender, allowing both runners to move into scoring position. Sam Praytor followed with an RBI-single to center to push across Hamiter. After a pair of walks to load the bases, Diodati cleared them by sending a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right-center for a grand slam. The Tide then loaded the bases again before Praytor sent a bases-clearing double down the left field line to cross three more. Drew Williamson immediately followed with a single to right to cross Praytor and cap the inning's scoring. (11-0, Alabama)
  • T4 | With two on and two down, Hamiter singled to left-center to score one more. (12-0, Alabama)
  • T5 | The Tide added five more in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Will Patota came in to pinch-hit and promptly drew a walk to push a run across. Pinckney then doubled to right-center to score two more before pinch-hitter Bryce Eblin singled to left for an RBI. After a hit-by-pitch, Wilson singled through the right side to add one more. (17-0, Alabama)
  • B6 | College of Charleston got on the board with an RBI-double. The Cougars then added one more with an infield single and a balk that crossed the inning's final run. (17-3, Alabama)
  • T8 | A two-out single to left from Jackson Tate added one more. (18-3, Alabama)
  • T9 | With two on and two down, Patota doubled to right to score a pair of runs. Patota came home in the next at-bat as Pinckney found an open area in left-center for an RBI-single. (21-3, Alabama)
Postgame Notes
  • The Crimson Tide offense posted 21 runs in today's game. The 21 runs matches the Tide's output at Samford on April 9, 2019.
  • Alabama scored 10 runs in the third inning, the most by the Crimson Tide in any single inning this season. The 10 runs in the frame are the most in an inning since UA posted 10 against UAB on Feb. 28, 2007.
  • The Crimson Tide recorded 20 hits in today's contest. The 20 hits are the most by an Alabama offense since UA totaled the same amount against Nicholls State on Feb. 24, 2016.
  • Thirteen of the Tide's 14 hitters recorded at least one hit on the afternoon, including all nine starters. All 14 hitters reached base safely in the game.
  • Owen Diodati recorded his second grand slam of the season. The sophomore also notched a grand slam against McNeese on Feb. 21.
  • Sam Praytor finished 2-for-3 on the day to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Across that time, the Tide catcher is batting .294 (10-34) with four doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI, seven runs, six walks and a hit-by-pitch.
  • Jim Jarvis extended his hitting streak to eight games thanks to his 1-for-2 effort. The sophomore is batting .375 (9-24) with a double, three RBI, five runs, three walks, a pair of hit-by-pitch and a stolen base across the current streak.
Alabama returns home this week to begin a five-game homestand, first with South Alabama on Tuesday, March 9.
