🏈 "The Saban Way"

Who are you Terry? I think you are secretly a sweet ninja superspy pirate who can fly, walk on water and poop ice creme while saving the world from terrorist, the Clintons, Barbara Streisand and idiocy.

Seriously how do you get your hands on this kind of stuff?

Great read and thanks!

yea I didn't catch the playbook in there...did I miss something?

I've linked the playbook from '02 in another thread...it's the "I don't know JACK" thread...it'll take a few days for you to go through it. I have had it for a year now and still study aspects of it.

Fine flame away. I just don't like that stuff being public.

I think that kind of stuff is good for the university. Parents see that kind of stuff and want their kids to go to Alabama because of the kind of program Saban runs. I dunno, it's just a good look for Alabama. I know every university probably has this kind of stuff, but it sure looks good to the people who see it.

It seems to me like most of what I read was common sense. And it's very pleasing to actually see that someone besides myself still believes in it. That seems to be a big problem in our country today. No one has any common sense.
When we read about a kid who got kicked off of a team for violating the rules we ask ourselves "What was he thinking?" He probably just didn't have any common sense. He'd always acted like that before and nothing happened. Why would this be any different? No one on Saban's team will have that excuse. It appears as though he has laid down his philosophy in black and white and if you choose not to adhere to it, then good riddance.

Yea I was checking that out earlier, and it had my head going in circles. I just thought that this whole things was extremely motivating...and I've never spoken a word to Saban. Just reading it made me want to play for the guy!

I have a friend of mine that his the HC for a local private school that just started a football program 3 years ago. I spent a little time with him last year watching his practices and looked over a few CD's he had that contained playbooks (offense and defense) for 40+ teams; several in the SEC. Truly some interesting stuff.

What's interesting about looking over the playbook I posted is you see immediately how a new staff and their terminology is one of the biggest obstacles a kid has to overcome. A lot of the plays are the same with any 3-4 defense, but when you have 100's of different terms to call plays you can see how it can become confusing. It makes you have even more respect for a kid like Ro to be able to come in, get the system and terminology down, and then lead the defense as a freshman.

FWIW, Franklin's offense at AU is well publicized. But, I seriously doubt any DC worth his salt is going to spend time reading over their playbook.

Well the thing is, with a defensive playbook...it's more of schemes as opposed to plays in an offensive playbook. If you're handing out offensive playbooks you can see where people are going to be going on the field...but even still, with a big playbook like most college and professional coaches have now days, looking at a playbook is about as good as looking at film of them playing...unless the playbook is giving out the "calls" or "secret terminology". I hate to bring this up about Saban, but he got caught taping audio of the Patriots, while he was with the Dolphins. The next time they played the Patriots they beat them even though the Patriots were a much better team.

I love looking at defensive schemes like that. I tend to be more defensive minded...kinda like Saban (although we're not on the same level). The standard 4-3 defense is fun to look at, but I love looking at different schemes such as Saban's style 3-4...and I find the 3-3 (Rich Rod's and J. Kines) interesting. But I'm not that big of a fan of a full-time 3-man front.

You should like this brief breakdown of the 33 defense then.
