Good- Ty Simpson. 3 games in and 3 games of significant growth. He's making a few (expected) mistakes and misreads here and there, but if you were expecting near perfection from him at this point, then you're just as off target as those that blamed the FSU game on him. IMO, he's actually a bit ahead at this point of what I was expecting. He's got the pocket awareness of a 3 year starter, not a 3 game starter. And we talked about it in the pre-season, but he just throws an incredibly catchable football... placement and touch.
-Along those lines on Simpson, Ryan Grubb has put him in a lot of winning situations these last 2 games... Simpson has made some tough, tight window throws (the TD to Horton for example), but he's also had the luxury of hitting guys wide open on many plays. And credit to him for finding them, because they haven't all been the 1st read.
-The double reverse pass TD to Williams was SEXY.
-Oh yeah, good to see you again, Ryan Williams. Other than that drop on the post for what would have been his 3rd TD, he played great.
-Through 3 quarters, Alabama had run just 43 offensive plays yet had 22 1st downs. That's movin' the chains right there...
-Bray Hubbard. Kid has responded well after getting called out for his lack of hustle at FSU. He stood up and took ownership of it and has played his ass off now in the 2 games since. His 2 interceptions today directly led to 10 points, but should have been 14 had Williams hauled in the TD throw from Simpson.
-Qua Russaw is still showing flashes... he just needs to take that next step (soon) and be more consistent.
-The playing time that London Simmons is getting right now in place of the injured DT's will pay huge dividends later. Obviously, you'd love to have the full healthy stable of tackles, but this is the bright side. And with Keenan retuting in 2 weeks, things are at least looking better there.
-The defense handled the eye candy and misdirection MUCH better today than they did in Tallahassee 2 weeks ago. Still some things to shore up there, but a big step in the right direction. Vandy will test Bama again in due time, so they need to have it sorted.
Bad- Did not love the early 4th and 2 call to go for it... or the play call itself. Way too desperate there, just kick, pin them back, and play defense. But, they got the INT on the next play, so it worked out...
-Simpson made things look better than they were, but Bama still had too many issues in pass protection. Also, very little push for the inside running game, especially early. Things got a little better as the game wore on... but some of that was due to just wearing them down (and probably some oppressive heat).
-Not a huge deal, but Bama was just 2 for 7 on 3rd downs. To me, the most disappointing ones were late in the game when it was already over with.
-Defensive confusion is still cropping up too often, and almost always involves the LB's. Also, some calls were too late to get in, a couple of subbing issues... just little detail things that can lead to big issues.
-The team as a whole got a little sloppy in the 4th. Human nature and all with that type of lead, but we saw some things that would have sent Saban into orbit, with guys losing focus. (And before anyone says or assumes anything, that isn't a knock on DeBoer... there just isn't another coach alive who handled it like Saban... not even Kirby... it's just one of those things I (we) got so used to seeing and it still feels odd now when we don't.)
-A couple too many missed tackles on defense that gave Wisconsin extra yardage.
Ugly- Giving up the kickoff return for a TD. Can't have that... and it was set up by the dumb penalty.
-LT Overton getting injured... Hopefully it's nothing too bad that'll cause him to miss time or be limited. He's another guy this defense just can't afford to lose.
Notes- When Justin Jefferson knows what he's supposed to be doing, he's a force. Flying around. He just needs to know what he's supposed to do, all the time, not some or most of the time.
-The road gets rocky and steep from here on out... a very unforgiving schedule with 1 loss already stuck in UA's pocket. While the win was nice today, and seeing Bama control things for pretty much the entire game, the fact is, Wisconsin isn't a very good team. They'll be damn lucky to win 4 games this year.
-Bama now gets a free week to rest up, get some impact players back in the fold, and some extra time to scheme for UGA... hope they all make the most of it. They are improving each week... keep that trend up and the Bulldogs will be in trouble.
-Roll Tide.
