The Double-A Altoona Curve will play as the Altoona Pizzas for a full week later this season, paying tribute to a culinary wonder that combines Sicilian-style pizza with square, processed American cheese. The announcement has been met with a chorus of social media pundits yucking Altoona pizza lovers’ yum.

Altoona-style pizza, such as it is, features a thick crust with tomato sauce, bell peppers, salami, and either Velveeta or yellow American cheese. According to the website Discovering PA, the unique style of pizza was created at the Altoona Hotel in the 1960s or ’70s. That hotel burned down in 2013 but the pizza lives on at a number of other local establishments.

1. That pizza looks ungood. Putting Velveeta on a pizza should be a misdemeanor.

2. The Barons should play a series as the Birmingham Davenports (which would be perfect if they were a Giants affiliate). Maybe since they are a White Sox affiliate, they should do the Birmingham Tortugas instead... at least that would make more sense and you could have a pretty cool Tortuga logo on the uniforms with a tortoise and a pizza.

Used to stop by a place called Ledo Pizza in Upper Marlboro, MD on the way home from work to pick up one of their square pizzas. They had regular bacon as a topping. It was actually very good.
