NEW YORK CITY – History was made on Thursday as former Alabama women's tennis star Alexa Guarachi became the first UA alumna to win a Grand Slam match after she and partner Bernada Bera defeated Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya in the first round of the U.S. Open Women's Doubles Draw. The duo won their match 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-2, to move on to play in the second round.
The date and opponent of the second-round match have yet to be announced. The duo will take on the winner of No. 5 seed Demi Schuurs/Anna-Lena Gronefeld and Alize Cornet/Fiona Ferro.
Guarachi is currently ranked No. 86 in the world in doubles and the 2019 U.S. Open appearance is her sixth consecutive Grand Slam as she has also competed in the 2019 Wimbledon, 2019 French Open, 2019 Australian Open, 2018 U.S. Open and 2018 Wimbledon.
