I agree with a lot of the coaching issues you mentioned. I've watched USF ovwer the years and they are a really streaky team. Up and down, Jekyll and Hyde from one game to the next. They often look good upsetting higher ranked opponents one week, then lay down in a game the next.They're a hard team to figure out, and that has to be attributed to coaching (atleast to a certain degree).
