Son shipped out to boot camp

My son hugged me bye this morning before I went to work. We go to see him swear in tomorrow in Nashville. My pride in him is conflicting with a father's desire to keep his children close for protection.
He seems to have caught his father's urge to hit the sea.
I'm reminded of President Kennedy's quote.

A man is asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: 'I served in the United States Navy.

My oldest daughter is considering military service, she's a senior in high school. I totally know what you mean - both my wife and I served. Conflicted, but supportive and PROUD as hell if that's the path she chooses.

It is tough. My son did basic/AIT for the Guard in 2015-2016. He is supposed to deploy next year. None of that is easy to deal with. Like you said, you have pride in them but a fear of what it may mean.

proud for your son that he chose to serve.

just remember, your desire to keep your children safe will one day turn to pride in knowing that he is helping to keep many more Americans safe.
