He'll be in the same situation, I guess, minus the scenery. He'll make more money and be able to go undefeated in a crappy conference.

Just picked this up from yahoo. Maybe scenery only keeps you fighting an uphill battle for so long.

The Honolulu Advertiser, citing Jones' friend, Al Souza, reported Jones resigned Saturday morning. Jones said he would leave the university because of a lack of commitment from athletic department leaders, among other reasons, the paper said.

"This breaks his heart," Souza said of Jones' decision to leave.

Jones also sent letters to friends announcing that he is resigning, the Advertiser and television reports said.

Kent Untermann, a former Hawaii football player and a member of the Na Koa booster club, told KHNL that Jones' was leaving because of frustration with how the athletic department was run, not because he felt his salary was too low.

"He wants to be here but he has come to the point where he feels nothing is going to change," Untermann said. "He feels he has done his part but hasn't gotten the support and leadership from the administration."

I know it would be more money, but why would you leave there for Dallas? Oh well....

I think it's very smart of him to go to SMU. Being at Hawaii is great and all but there is nothing else he can do there, he took them to a 12-0 regular season and their first BCS game ever. The game didn't go like they wished but just making it to that game is a great accomplishment. Now, going to SMU can open some very big doors. First you have to remember SMU is in some great recruiting ground, Texas has plenty of 4 and 3 star high school athletes to share with all those Texas schools, you compare that to Hawaii and there is no comparison. Second, there are more opportunities to show his team to the nation being on the mainland, honestly how many Hawaii games have you seen on TV? Once, twice, three times??? Plus, they were only on tv since they had a chance on going undefeated and had Colt Brennan. Once he gets working on SMU and gets his system in place, I can guarantee you SMU will be on TV more than 6 times on the year. And Third, the Alumni, there are lots of rich Alumni that want to see SMU back on the winning side of the ball. The facilities are superior and the athletic department will do whatever they need to do win. Coach Jones could bring some success to a once powerhouse program, or at least use this chance to move on to a BCS school. I wish him luck there and hope Hawaii will find a new coach soon. I've like Hawaii ever since we started playing them, so I wish them the best.

For a lot of reasons I think. Maybe SMU could be viewed as a slight step up. Recruiting would definately be easier. Success at a mainland school might also propel Jones into a gig at a big time school. I'm just speculating on most of that, but I know that recruiting would be a lot easier than in Hawaii. Even the leftovers in Texas are top notch players.

Besides the "uphill battle" he'd been fighting regarding the athletic department, there's the cost of living. It's tremendously higher in Hawaii than in Dallas. I would guess that a higher salary, a lower cost of living, and a prime recruiting area trumps Paradise.

I completely agree with his decision, especially if Hawaii was as unwilling to upgrade the football budget as people claim. If Jones can land just a fraction of the big name recruits out of Texas (it shouldn't be hard, besides Mack Brown, he's the only other coach in the state which has made it to the BSC in the last decade), he will have all the makings of a powerhouse mid-major school.

For that matter, even if Jones falls flat on his face, he will still be set for life. He stands to make 2M a year. I'm sure SMU will give him at least 4 years. If he is fired at the end of those 4 years, he has still earned about 6M more dollars than the average college grad can expect in their lifetime.
