Mississippi State is a charter member of the SEC, same as Alabama. State plays in the SEC West, same as Alabama. The State team that beat Alabama last season in Starkville wasn't a one-hit wonder.
The Bulldogs ended with the same conference record as Alabama and a better overall record. They played in and won their first bowl game in seven years. They beat the Auburn team that Alabama hasn't beaten in ... how long has it been?
How many fingers is Tommy Tuberville holding up?
Not to mention, the Mississippi State team that beat Alabama last season now has a two-game winning streak in the series.
Losing to State may be unexpected, at least from a historical perspective, but it's not unprecedented. Or inexcusable. Or an embarrassment like losing to Monroe.
When it's all said and done Mississippi State is still Mississippi State and Alabama is still Alabama. And losing to a team like State is an "embarressment" and it is "inexcusable". Spin it any way you want to, and yeah, State has beaten us twice lately, but in the end things have not gotten so bad that BAMA fans consider State a pivotal matchup every season, nor do they ever expect to lose to them. Nor should they.
I commend Croom on what he's done there but State is not the SEC's next powerhouse. In fact, I would wager that last season is about the best that State can ever expect to do, especially with the makeup of the West now. Do you really think Petrino will not turn Arkansas into a prolific offense (assuming he stays any length of time)? Is Croom going to best Saban on a regular basis? Is he going to out-talent AU? LSU? Please. Ole Miss might have a better season that State this year.
