Former UA running back arrested

TUSCALOOSA | Former University of Alabama running back Santonio Beard was arrested early Saturday morning on drug possession charges.

Capt. Greg Kosloff, spokesman for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, said cocaine and marijuana were found in Beard’s possession when a police patrol division stopped Beard on a traffic stop.

Kosloff said an agent with the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force called to the scene arrested Beard.

Beard, 28, was charged with possession of cocaine and second-degree marijuana possession, and booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail about 3 a.m. with a $6,000 bond. He bailed out less than an hour later.

Details about Beard’s location when he was arrested weren’t immediately available.

A native of Nashville, Tenn, Beard lettered for the Crimson Tide in 2001 and 2002, but left after his junior year in 2002 in hopes of playing professional football. Though undrafted in 2003, he eventually signed a free agent contract with the Denver Broncos, but was released after the 2004 season.

That is a shame. He has been doing some work with the sports radio team here in Tuscaloosa this season calling HS football games. I was hoping he had finally gotten his head on straight and settled down.

Ya'll, I love Tuscaloosa. But I am convinced that the bad elements in that town, which every city that size has, really are a drag on these student athletes and former student athletes. While we always have the choice to say NO to situations, sometimes we lack the willpower. And to be honest, a lot of us were never in the same place in this world as some of these guys. We just never had those drugs and bad people right there within arms reach.

Very sad.

He can still turn things around in his life. I hope he wakes up after he finishes dealing with this, rather than continuing the spiral downward.
