| FTBL Saban press conference—Aug. 09 (after first scrimmage)

-- Saban said scrimmage started with good intensity. Knew there would be weather issues but thought it would be important to learn game administration, etc.

-- "It really wasn't that bad out there." Said the break was about 40 minutes.

-- Likes what he saw from the quarterbacks, but said it would be unfair to evaluate them based on statistics. Stressed it was two quarterbacks.

-- "We have a lot of things we did very well out there." Liked what he saw from the running backs and receivers.

-- "Defensively, we have a long way to go."

-- "We have a lot of defensive players that are out. If you added them up on the two deep, that's a lot of guys."

-- Saban said he was pleased with the kicking. Adam Griffith was 4-for-5. Missed field goal came when he kicked with the backup holder.

-- "We have a long way to go in terms of developing a team. The players have to understand why good teams win."

-- Alabama scrimmaged a segment where it simulated uptempo offense. "It's hard to simulate when you're not a no-huddle team."

-- "We have practiced it more."

-- "We need to improve on defense period."

-- On defensive line: Saban highlights Jonathan Allen, D.J. Pettway, Darren Lake and (we think) Josh Frazier.

-- Saban said Dalvin Tomlinson didn't scrimmage because his toe was stepped on Friday.

-- More on QBs: "I think they both did a lot of good things, I think they both had some things they wish they had back."

-- "We're not pleased or satisfied completely with where they are but we're not disappointed with the progress we're making at the position."

-- On potential health concerns: TE Kurt Freitag with turf toe. DB Geno Smith sprained his knee. Couple of guys with ankle sprains.

-- SIGNIFICANT INJURY NEWS: OG Dominick Jackson has an ankle sprain that could keep him out for a couple of weeks.

-- CB Eddie Jackson did not scrimmage. "That was our choice not to do that."

-- Cyrus Jones and Bradley Sylve credited with a good camp. "They're all getting plenty of turns and they're all getting to play a lot."

-- On the identity: "I like this team." Says team really likes each other off the field. Leadership is a work in progress. Perhaps more maturity/leaders on offense than defense at this point.

-- On O-line: "Cam Robinson's doing really well, been doing well all camp." Leon Brown will increase his workload this week. "We've been physical up front."

-- First mention of freshman T Ross Pierschbacher. Saban says he could contribute in two-deep.

-- Saban said he'll be watching the scrimmage film at home tonight. It will be at his house before he gets there.

-- Saban says he grades offense and defense on winning plays relative to down and distance and losing plays on same terms.

-- "Squad Sunday" is tomorrow.
