As for Marve and Saban... Saban liked his ability, everyone did, the problem for Marve (or his father at least) was Saban refused to promise playing time like Shula did. After that point was made clear to them, Marve opted for Miami and UA opted for Fanuzzi.

I'm still amazed at how the former staff looked at players and assessed their ability.

Bob Wyatt: Chapman wasn't much of a priority for our DL yet here we see him as a redshirt freshman in our starting rotation at NG.

Ball: Javy is a great return guy, not discovered by Ball in that position, but wasn't one that could contribute as a corner.

Wasn't that an underlying part of the problem all along? By that I mean, Shula put together a staff in May (after most coaches had a job), took what was available, and stuck with them no matter what through the years. IMO, he got lucky on one (maybe two)of the coaches.

Hell, he really didn't "put together" a staff. Our defensive side was the same, Price hired them.

On offense, he brought in Rader and Harbinson.

At least, I think those are the only two...kept Sparky as RB and Con as OL.

I know I'm forgetting someone here...

Kines, Ball, Randolph, Wyatt, Woods, Con were all Price hires. Harbinson and Rader were Shula hires...

Who am I forgetting...TE coach?

Regarding Shula's hires, also add the DL/DE coach hired from Vanderbilt. David something-or-the-other.

I always thought Ungerer (sic?) was a solid hire - for special team schemes at least. (I am not sold that Ungerer (sic?) was all that helpful in the techniques of the actual kickers - a minor little point.)

Our special teams were the units hit the hardest by the probation and limited numbers. Frankly, we just did not have the fresh legs (had to use far, far too many regulars) to effectively practice the schemes put in place or maintain any in-game or season-long continued high quality play. (One of the greatest benefits of Saban recruiting a high number of OLB and SS types is our kicking units will show dramatic improvement over the next two years.)

Now Ungerer (sic?) was meaningless as a TE or offensive coach. But, in my opinion, a lot (but not all) of that was the result of Shula being anchored to his system. The final act of Shula trying to ADD offensive tackles to Ungerer still causes my head to shake in disbelief.
