Report: Wake Forest expected to hire South Alabama coach, former Alabama player Rob Ezell as new OC
Rob Ezell has been rising through the coaching ranks, and he caught the eye of Wake Forest in the process. The former Alabama player turned South Alabama assistant is joining the Demon Deacons as their new offensive coordinator, according to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports/247Sports.
“Wake Forest is expected to hire South Alabama’s Rob Ezell as its new offensive coordinator, sources tell @chris_hummer and me for @CBSSports/@247Sports,” Zenitz posted on X. “Ezell, whom @JohnDBrice1 reported was being pursued by Wake, helped South Alabama rank No. 2 in the Sun Belt in scoring this year.”
While Ezell has become a more than formidable coach, his most famous moment may be his incredible impression of Nick Saban. The former Crimson Tide wide receiver went viral during his playing days for the imitation, which you can check out below.
If the coaching journey didn’t work out for Ezell, at least he always had a career path as a Saban impressionist. Alas, he seems to be on his way towards being a major figure in his profession though, as Wake Forest will deliver him his best opportunity yet.
The Demon Deacons are bound to look a lot different in 2025 following the sudden and surprise resignation of previous head coach Dave Clawson. They opted to hire Jake Dickert, previously of the Washington State Cougars, to replace their longtime coach, and he believes in Ezell.
Dickert is going to bring four seasons of head coaching experience with him. He took over as the interim head coach at Washington State in 2021, replacing Nick Rolovich, and would go on to earn the full-time job in Pullman. Since then, he has a 23-20 record and led the Cougars to three bowl games.
Just 41 years old, Dickert is seen as an up-and-coming coach in college football. Prior to his time at Washington State, he worked his way up as a defensive assistant, with stops at Wyoming, South Dakota State, Minnesota State, and North Dakota State among others.
All told, Rob Ezell already has learned from some of the great ones, and perhaps being able to pick Jake Dickert’s brain will help him continue up the coaching ranks in college football. Maybe he’ll even develop an impression of his new boss in Winston-Salem while he’s at it.
