Referenced in a recent post is the possibility of using two Punt Returns vice one. Which do you think would be more productive for us?

The thoughts of BJ Scott AND Javy back there is great. I only say Scott instead of Maze because he would be a much better blocker IF Javy did get the ball.

Agreed. Although, I love the speed Maze will bring to the field.

If teams start kicking away from Javy it's just going to increase the chances for their mistakes on blocking lanes.

We are in a win-win situation.

Only one guy will carry the ball, which means that the other is just an undersized blocker at best. Does the increased chance of getting the ball into the hands of an athlete in space out weigh the loss of an additional legitimate blocker?

With two players 40 yards deep, this would also open us up to more fake punts.

Do you still feel the same?

Yes, I do.

It's not like the additional returner is supposed to move a guy off the line...it's more about re-directing his attach or at least just getting in the way.

Agreed. The return game is as much (or more) about making guys miss in space, than it is about helmet on helmet blocking.

I think two can only be beneficial, IMO. Fake punts usually work or don't work, its not much one person can make a difference for. And the difference it might make is MUCH less than the difference of having a great athlete return every ball punted deep. Maze and Arenas would be my bet. Granted Maze can handle punts.

I agree. Although it is something to think about, I don't see opposing teams saying, "They've got two deep, let's fake it."

To me, fake punts happen at specific points of the game at specific places on the field.

The idea of two returners deciding which one is to take the punt, running into each other, and losing concentration scares me.

Yep, like the one Bob Stoops used to break my heart that warm September night in Bryant-Denny.
