TUSCALOOSA | It was the kind of hit coaches envisioned when they started thinking about Jimmy Johns at linebacker. It happened earlier this week, and even though players generally avoid giving a good “pop” to teammates during practices, the junior couldn’t help himself.

His victim, caught off guard, was running back Glen Coffee, whom since they were recruited in the same class in 2005 had lined up beside each other during drills. That was until this week, and that hit, which Johns didn’t really boast about, but had a smile on his face when telling reporters they should ask Coffee about it.

“Jimmy thinks he’s a funny guy,” Coffee said.

i really like this move of JJ to linebacker. especially now.

doing it now instead of during the regular season is an advantage for us since there won't be any game film on him at LB.

most of our rivals during the season saw him at either fullback or on special teams. they know how fast he is...at running with the ball. but they don't know how good he can be at running to the ball; or how hard he can really hit when going after the poor sap with the ball.

i can't wait to see him lay the smack down on some buffalo ball carriers.

well they'll know he can lay some wood on somebody from his special teams plays. hes always laying somebody out on kickoffs.

Does anyone thik he will actually play in the bowl game at LB. He has not been on defense at all this year.

I could see him getting a few reps if we had a huge lead late in the game. In saying that, I doubt it will happen.

I wouldn't be shocked if he does get some reps in the game. He's picking up the position quickly and that isn't surprising considering the time he's spent on offense. That experience (on O) gives him a bit of a heads up vs a newcomer because he understands a lot about what offenses are doing.

And, FWIW, as of tonight I'm beginning to think this isn't going to be as close of a game as some are fearing. But, than again, that very well may change by tomorrow.

Indeed!

I wouldn't look for it unless there's an injury or we have a decent lead. If he blows one coverage it could lead to a TD. That said, I hope he can make the transition because he is one helluva athlete.
