Nobody wants to make that kind of commitment a year out. Too many things can happen. Team has a bad season. Coach gets fired. Coach retires. Expected teammates decommit and go elsewhere.

Yea this doesn't seem like a good fix...just set consistent dates for both. Just make transfer season after NSD but before final enrollment dates and move NSD up to Early January after the National Championship Game...then set Open Transfer Portal window from 3 days after NSD until Feb 5th gives like 3 weeks for transfers and everything else to figure itself out. Also keeps the season extended through early February and people interested/invested. Allows for a clear cut between ESD/NSD and Transfer Portal/Free agency of a few days. This whole thing isn't rocket science, sometimes the smartest solution is the most obvious one.
