aubrun itself has shown a little resurgence. It's actually a little on the pricey side for housing, but it's because of an educational donut effect. The surrounding area is SO crappy (particularly schools) that anyone with interest in having their kids in an acceptable school system has to live in the city limits. That tendency to pack into aubrun is at the expense of the surrounding area, driving it to rock, rock bottom. Not much competition to be the loveliest village on the plains.Economically, the donut effect has been repeated several times around the State. Dothan is perhaps the best example. The more Dothan grows, the more it sucks commerce from the surrounding small towns like Abbeville and Columbia. On a much smaller scale, Monroeville has done the same to Beatrice and Peterman. In these instances, those communities are forced to hang on (or in Peterman's case, hang it up) until there is enough development for them to become bedroom communities of the larger town.RTR,Tim
