Lockerbie bombing memorial on campus

For those who do not know, I work in study abroad at Syracuse University. I just wanted to share these images of a display on campus. I found it moving and poignant.

This week is Remembrance Week on campus, in honor of the 35 students from SU who died in the Lockerbie / Pan Am 103 bombing in 1988. The bombing occurred just before Christmas, but we host the week event in October when the weather is still decent / students are still around. 270 people died total in the attack, including 11 Lockerbie, Scotland residents on the ground. The 35 students had just spent a study abroad semester at our London Center, and were coming home for Christmas. Some of my coworkers worked directly with the students, and the students went through our office, so we are closely involved in the remembrance events. Tomorrow will be a rose laying at 2:03 pm, the time the plane exploded and fell to earth. The families of the victims, including ones all the way from Scotland, come to honor the dead.

Syracuse also has 35 Remembrance Scholars each year, one in honor of each student, who honor their memory. We also have 2 Lockerbie Scholars each year, who come to study at Syracuse for one year (and often end up staying for their college career).

Each chair in the images below represents an SU student and where they were sitting on the plane. On each chair, students wrote about kind things they had done for others recently.
