You don't see many 30 something year old guys just starting out their boxing careers.....

If Creed died in '85, even if he were born shortly before that, that makes him 30 years old now....

Unless, Maybe the movie is set in the late 90"s or even early to mid 2000's. Leaves room for progression. I tried to no avail to find something to confirm that.
