šŸˆ Jeremy Pruitt chastised for embarrassing Vols QB Jarrett Guarantano:

Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt blew a gasket during Saturday night's loss to Alabama after quarterback Jarrett Guarantano fumbled on 4th-and-Goal at the 1-yard line, leading to a 100-yard fumble return touchdown by Crimson Tide corner Trevon Diggs.

Guarantano extended his arms over the pile but lost control of the football and saw it dribble into the end zone into the hands of Diggs.

Pruitt began barking at Guarantano on his way back to the sideline, pulling his signal caller's facemask at one point to prove a point before continuing to berate him in front of teammates for his mistake.

ā€œGuarantano shouldn’t have fumbled the football, but that was not well-executed by anyone on Tennessee, not just the quarterback,ā€ ESPN college football analyst Brian Griese said, who was Saturday night's color commentator. ā€œI don’t see the point of that.ā€

Griese said he'd have no issue with Pruitt's reaction if Guarantano had decided to "go rogue" and call his own number.

"That kind of thing would lead to the situation we saw with Jeremy Pruitt," Griese said.

Other member of the broadcast immediately challenged Pruitt's extreme disciplinary measure.

ā€œI don’t see the benefit of it,ā€ ESPN analyst Todd McShay said from the sideline. ā€œUndressing your quarterback after a play you called.ā€

Members of the national media took great exception to Pruitt's behavior and let him hear it on social media:

As you can see, Pruitt is not happy with his veteran quarterback, who entered the game as Tennessee's No. 2 but was thrust into action following a head shot to Brian Maurer in the first half.

SportsCenter anchor Stan Verrett leaves no stone unturned here, defending the amateur Guarantano. Not only does Verrett detail his reasoning, but he leaves a parting shot for Tennessee's football program in its wake.

Considering a touchdown would've made it a one-score game midway through the fourth quarter against the nation's No. 1-ranked team, perhaps Pruitt's reaction wasn't as 'emotionally unstable' as some suggested.

Pat Forde echoes Griese's sentiment, saying Pruitt's actions were justified if Guarantano audibled out of the play-call and call his own number. It'll be interesting to see if the facts surface in the aftermath

Another take on the late-game situation and a good one at that. Why try to pick up yards between the tackles against one of the nation's toughest defenses against the rush? Red zone failures detonated Tennessee's upset bid in Tuscaloosa.

Viewed by many as degrading, Pruitt went too far with the facemask grab — and he'll likely be the first to admit that. But yelling and screaming in the heat of the action is par for the course in big-time college football and the athletes associated with it know this.

Not every media member disagreed with Pruitt's heavy-handedness with his quarterback. Mistake-prone this season, Guarantano's colossal error sealed the win for the Crimson Tide — an unexpected 14-point swing.

Pruitt was so angry after Guaratano's giveaway he benched his quarterback for Tennessee's third-teamer to play the final six minutes and change. Griese said during the broadcast the relationship between Pruitt and Guarantano is "probably not salvageable" after that.

Will Guarantano get an apology?

It was a bold move given the time and score for Pruitt, but let's face it, the game had been decided. Diggs' 100-yard gallop the other way sealed Tennessee's fate

goddamn! they act like he yanked his ass over to the sideline then spun his head around using his facemask. he tugged on his facemask with 1 damn finger. he didn't shake his head around (as is done when most facemask penalties are committed during a game). he didn't continue to hold on to it. he pulled at it once with one finger, then let go.

and how many times have many, many other coaches been that upset, or worse, after a boneheaded play?

oh, and that quarterback isn't some 3-year-old little boy who would cry on the sideline and ask for his mommy. he's an adult. if he can't take his coach yelling at him for screwing up, then he doesn't need to be playing organized sports.

the media needs to get over themselves trying to be a parent to all these "kids" playing college sports. like it or not, that's not your kid. and, like it or not, they're adults. they're all at least 18 years old or older. i guess these media lowlifes grew up in a perfect world where no one ever got in trouble or yelled at for screwing up. if so, they need to go back and let the grownups take over.

What a bunch of pussies who think that is a big deal..lol. Despise Tennessee with all my heart and don’t hate they are going thru some more contreversy but all the these stress kitten petting liberal Whiney babies is sickening.
Aren’t these the same people who are clambering for these players to get paid? That makes them a professional, or at least an adult who can enter into a contract for pay for play.. so.. these guys can’t be adults/professionals and still be delicate little boys all at the same time. If he was being paid then I think he can be screamed at and fired.. it goes with the paycheck.

By all means, make Tennessee’s day miserable but let’s not talk out of both sides of our mouth on this. And stop babying these guys we don’t need another generation of pussies!

I think I saw Deion Sanders or another former NFL player - can't remember who - that recently said, "We are raising a generation of a weak people." It's shit like this that backs that up. If you are triggered by a QB getting yelled at for doming something stupid and having his precious little facemask tugged, then by God you probably should never, ever attend a football practice from junior high school up.

The folks screaming have never played a down in their lives and most definitely haven't played with anything in the line. That wasn't anything most of us haven't experienced. Call your own play and not the coaches, deal with the consequences. The one guy making a point Pruitt makes millions, uh yeah, he's trying to protect his job and making sure the quarterback does what he says.

I remember seeing Lou Holtz pull a kid off the field by his face mask when he was at ND. Lou being waaay under 6 feet tall and this kid looked to be about 6'4" and the build of a TE. Gnawing his ass up and down for doing something on the field. But when he did it, peoples feelings weren't at the forefront of everything that was being done. The future is gonna be sad.

From my experiences with Pruitt, he was an asshole. Not to me but to his teammates, back in HS(I covered local HS football for a year, his Sr year, while looking for an IT job after college). That said, this is overreaction. He did not jerk his head around or anything, he gave a small tug to get his attention. Also, from all indications, he has been making bonehead mistakes all year.
