I think if we hired Croom we would have won more games than we did with Shula and we would probably still have him.
You're not going to win consistently with sub-par players.
Nobody can do that, not even Coach Saban. There can be an occasional flicker of hope, ala a 24 point win over Tennessee, but 6-4 talent will usually give you 6-4 results. You can't make chicken salad without the chicken.
I do think, however, that we would have been far better off in our evaluations of high school talent had Croom been chosen over Shula. FWIW, look for many current players to be replaced over the offseason as our identity and reputation as a program begins to mirror our coach.
Let's face it. For the most part, these were not highly sought after high school prospects. Add the fact that they received no discipline or strength and conditioning program, and you've got a disaster on your hands. I'm not surprised at all that we're in the situation we're in today.
There were quite a few of us projecting a 7 win season, with me being one of them. And while there's no excuse for ever losing to State, there's not as much shame in it in 2007 as previous years. They're a solid, fundamentally sound football team that gives 100% each game. I've got to give Coach Croom his due.
We've got to keep our eyes on the goal, as a program, and focus on our upcoming games. Dwelling on the MSU loss will do nothing for us.
