| FTBL I'd rather live in Hawaii...

Why in the world would Jones, who IS Hawaii football, go to SMU to be just as irrelevent as he is now in Hawaii? At least in Hawaii he's living in paradise. SMU will never again be anything in college football. It's not a promotion in terms of job stature.

Many people cite their facilities. But, still...I'm with you brother.

He may be having a "coaching midlife crisis".

We know that he will not get the first tier recruits, but then he has done all that he has done at Hawaii with leftovers. The leftovers of Texas High School Football are much better than what he was getting at UH. True, the schedule should be tougher, but playing the teams he needs to play to get respect is now an easy option -- should he win those games.

Frankly, on level I'm interested to see what he can do there...in a science experiment kind of way.

UH will always draw some up-na-comer because its living and coaching in Hawaii. Heck, I might send in my resume. Should I put it on a yellow or orange Post-It note?

Of course a flight to Dallas is a cheap price to pay if it prompts the UH boosters to pony up money for better facilities. It could be a bluff.

Here's my take: I think Jones is flirting with SMU to force the school to improve the facilities and most importantly, his recruiting budget. With the budget that Hawaii has now, Jones is unable to recruit effectively in the mainland. The recruits he gets either come from Hawaii (not a football rich state), other Pacific islands (some have good players, but mostly lineman and linebackers), and transfers from other D-I schools. At least at SMU, Jones would be able to visit recruits and widen his recruiting base.

I don't expect Jones to make the move, however, I wouldn't be suprised if he did. SMU has numerous rich boosters (they used to pay better than the NFL pre-death penality days), and is wishing to spend millions to get their pre-death penality glory back (I can ever remember when SMU belonged to a major conference and I'm only 23.) There's no way that SMU will ever be able to compete with Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech again, but if he could edge out all the other mid-major schools in the area (Baylor included)for recruits he would make one of the best football programs in the lower leagues.

Simply stated, SMU could quickly become like our state's Troy. With good coaching, a few topnotch players, and a solid roster of players that weren't good enough to play at the state's top programs, SMU should play competitively with the major programs (at least for the first half), score an upset or two over the BSC schools, and dominate its conference. However, unlike Troy, SMU will have millions in donor money to help make that possible.

Just a FWIW note on this...if he's making 800K at Hawai'i, he'd need just under half that amount in Dallas to maintain the same standard of living.

But, then again, it is Hawai'i.

No doubt, comparing 800,000 to 2 million living in Hawaii vs Texas, you could keep your house in Hawaii and have a house in Texas, if you took the SMU job. Price of living in Hawaii is really high and making 800,000 a year is comfortable living, but 2 million in Texas is upper class living.

I would expect Hawaii to offer a pay raise to Coach Jones. I wouldn't blame him for leaving but it would be hard pressed for me to leave that Island under any circumstances. He is The Big Kahuna in Hawaii right now, I would imagine Hawaii will ante up if they want to keep their football team at a high profile level when it comes to their program. Coach Jones has added another reason to play for Hawaii other than the sites and paradise living.

The one thing I don't have a definitive answer for, and I suspect no one does, is if he has a couple of down years in Hawai'i I don't see his job being in jeopardy. On the other hand, if he's making 2M at SMU and they don't show improvement where is he in 3-5 years? The same place he was when he left ATL...looking for a job.

I'd bet, if they put 1.2 or 1.3 on the table he stays...

Exactly. That's the thing about Hawaii that some people don't know about is the cost of living. I live in L.A. where it's off the charts but last time I checked both Alaska and Hawaii were even more expensive places to live. That's pretty unbelievable considering how expensive Southern Cal is. I've known people when I was in the Air Force that have told me it's not uncommon to be renting 1 bedroom apartments in Hawaii for $1,000 a month. I live in L.A. and I can't recall seeing that before, even here.

If it isn't already, it should be clear by now why you associate Spam with Hawai'i...can't afford much else.

I prolly shouldn't tell this but you know my wife is Asian right? Pacific Islander actually and she swears by the stuff. It's like an island thing I guess because it's big in the Philipines as well.

Yeah, one of my best friends played JUCO football out in Cali and he said it was RIDICULOUS. 1000+ in bills a month easily he told me...

Yes, I knew that...you told me that some time ago. I have to ask, does she make you use Spam as furniture polish as well?

I live in a 1 BR in Miami, FL and pay $1200! Try that on for size! No fun, to say the least...but it does have nice weather this time of year. :)

A better question really is why wouldn't he leave Hawaii. Would you leave your job for a 150% pay raise and a less expensive part of the country? DFW is far far from a crappy city too, it's actually quite nice.

I was listening to ESPN radio last night in the car and they were saying that SMU has top of the line facilities too. Recruiting is obviously a step up there too. UT and OU will always get the cream of the crop in Texas (and aTm to a lesser extent), but there's a lot of talent to go around there. Also, SMU is in C-USA, not the Big12. I believe that TCU is in Fort Worth and SMU is in Dallas. TCU has had some decent teams with the lower level Texas talent.

SMU will never again be anything in college football. Will they ever win a NC again? Probably not. However, I think they can possibly get to consistently winning 8ish games a year in C-USA. I'm not guaranteeing it or anything, but to say that they'll always be a really bad team is wrong IMO.

'02: 3-9
'03: 0-12
'04: 3-8
'05: 5-6
'06: 6-6
'07: 1-11

After these results, I don't think expectations will be super high either. The ultimate goal is probably just to consistently get SMU bowl eligible. All June Jones needs is a QB who can run his gimmicky system and he's good to go IMO.
