⚾ 🥎 Here are the 16 regional baseball hosts broken down by their playing surfaces:

Those with fake grass: Southern Miss • Kansas • Georgia • Oregon • Texas • West Virginia.

I'll have to do a little digging. I'm starting with the question, "why?" Two of these six are smack dab in the middle of sod farm country. Texas deserves a why. They have fake in the football and baseball venues, but natural in the softball and soccer venues. (Oh, a joke is there.)

The U of WV is located in the northern part of the state in Morgantown, about 40 minutes south of Pittsburgh. I understand why they have the fake grass with the snow they can get up until late April. Oregon probably has it because of all the rain in the NW. As far as the other schools, I have no idea why the other schools use the fake grass.

$$$$ Artificial turf is cheaper to maintain. No watering, no cutting, no fertilizing.

That fake grass stuff is weird to play on.

My son plays a ton of baseball and they play on natural surfaces and that fake stuff about equally.

There’s a noticeable difference in how the ball bounces vs the two. The heat index in the fake stuff is stupid high during the summer too. Like 20 degrees warmer type difference. We played a tournament last year in June where the field temp was around 120 degrees

I can understand why a high school or local rec might have that stuff. The maintenance is pretty minimal. There’s a large start up, but after that…..not as much cost involved.

But a major college? That doesn’t make sense to me.
