I am excited about the Utes playing the tide! We have great respect for Alabama football... but we are no Hawaii!

This is the game we have been waiting for since the 2004 Fiesta Bowl lame duck vs PITT!

Welcome to the best BAMA message forum around, westcoastute. We are looking forward to the Sugar Bowl as well. Congrats on your team making it to the bigger stage again.

Welcome and please don't think we won't take the game seriously or consider Utah a lame duck!

Looking forward to the matchup!

Heck.....BAMA was a 10pt favorite over Barn and I see were a 10pt favorite here. We didn't take Barn lightly and no reason to think we'll take Utah lightly. Coach Saban wants our guys to dominate every opponent. No reason to think he'll change his process in this spot.

Utah definately has some guys that will get your attention!

The confidence that you will see from the Utes and their fans comes from the fact that in recent history Utah has beaten the following teams...

Michigan
Oregon State
#10 UCLA
#20 USC (Trojans)
#22 Gergia Tech
Arizona (2)
#23 Texas A&M
#13 Oregon
#24 CAL
Indiana (2)
North Carolina
#23 PITT
Lousiville
South Florida

So while we have great respect for Alabama, the Utes are not overwhelmed or intimidated at all and are not overly worried about what a great Bama team brings to the table, we have been down that road before and got the t-shirts a few times.

BAMA is the face of college football in so many ways, what a great opportunity to face them!

In many ways the Ute fans demand respect. Mainly because that is all many of them ever talk about is demanding respect. If you want Alabama to respect the Utes, beat them on the field.

Red flags start flying everytime large groups of posters demand respect and will not have anything else but respect and then name off lackluster lists of teams they have beaten in the last 5 or 10 years.

Your post just seems like so many others on a board I just left. Almost every Ute fan that came to the board demanded respect and wanted it right then.

You guys need to let the team play the game and then demand respect and require that you get respect that all of you seem so overly concerned with.

The list of teams you reference is okay, it really is. Great wins. But don't make the mistake of believing that it is really, really impressive to Alabama fans. Alabama plays teams of that caliber every year, year in and year out, all year long.

Calm down fellas. We have name recognition and people have heard of Alabama, but that is no reason for all of you to freak out and start demanding respect at every turn. Alabama is a football team, Utah is a football team, let them earn the respect for you, not have it demanded on a message board.

But you don't have enough respect for them to capitalize the T in Tide while getting the U in Utes correct.

Just curious where he "demanded respect". Looked to me like he was simply pointing out that while Alabama is one of the best (if not the best) teams Utah has played, this squad and coaching staff have been in big games against big opponents before and likely won't be intimidated. That's a far cry from "I DEMAND that you respect our team!".

All in my humble opinion, of course. Besides, we usually only hear that sort of talk from BYU and Boise State fans. :)

But you don't have enough respect for them to capitalize the T in Tide while getting the U in Utes correct.

Yeah, but he put "BAMA" in all caps. Doesn't that offset the missed capital T? :D

I have seen this list of Utah wins posted several times on the forum, so I thought I would do some checking...you know, Clemson was top 10 when Alabama beat them this season...

Team Utah beat.........rank......final record

Michigan................na..........3-9
Oregon State............na..........8-4 (bowl pend)
UCLA....................10..........6-7
USC (Trojans)...........20..........6-6 (sure they were ranked?)
Gergia Tech.............22..........7-5
Arizona (2) (most recent 2).........3-8, 3-8
Texas A&M...............23..........7-5
Oregon..................13..........8-5 (lost to MSU)
CAL.....................24..........8-6
Indiana (2)(suck).......na..........5-6, 3-9
North Carolina..........na..........5-6
PITT....................23..........8-4
Lousiville..............na..........6-6
South Florida...........na..........7-4 and D1AA - 5th year of football!

Of the teams you listed, only 6 were D1 and had winning records. The combined records of those teams you listed is 90-98. That is not exactly the kind of stuff to use when attempting to command respect.

None of it has any bearing on this game. This Alabama team has a relentless offense and a punishing defense. Utah is a solid team that does not match up well with us. Bama is too big, too fast, too strong, and plays with a purpose - dominate each and every play.

Big_Fan, you lose credibility when you make posts like this. The basis for your confidence of an Alabama win is that they have played better teams this year (even though Alabama's strength of schedule is 10 spots lower than Utah's). Looking at the records of the teams you beat this year looks similar to the records of the teams Utah beat above:

You played
Clemson 7-5
Tulane 2-10
Western Kentucky 2-10
Arkansas 5-7
Georgia 9-3
Kentucky 6-6
Mississippi 8-4
Tennessee 5-7
Arkansas State
LSU 7-5
Mississippi State 4-8
Auburn 5-7
Florida 12-1

You had some very impressive wins over good teams but you also almost lost against a poor Kentucky team. I look forward to Jan 2nd. It will be much closer than you think.

PS - you were silent on my offer of a friendly wager. If you are so confident that Alabama will blow Utah out, why not agree to my wager?

Welcome aboard.

Whoever did the graphic you have tried to include in your sig (need to read the BBCode on how to post it, BTW) did a nice job...well...except for...err...the Alabama player you have pictured is no longer on the team. :?

Sorry to sound trite, but respect is earned...not given. I expect the Utah Football Team to earn some measure of respect....whether they win or not.

There are a couple of issues that I think are tied up in the question of respect.

First is the issue of a team's relative quality of performance. When we talk about respect what we often mean is whether others judge our team to be good/capable of winning/etc. Yes, I agree that type of respect is definitely earned. I also think a team that finishes their regular season undefeated has already earned some. The relative degree of respect probably depends on strength of schedule and other such things that are hard to measure...but the basis for respect is already there. The Utes have the chance to increase it when they take the field in the Sugar Bowl.

But there's another facet to respect which is not founded in measures of performance. It comes from things like good sportsmanship; helping a player from an opposing team up off the ground after you tackle him; giving your team 101%; showing up for practice on the days you don't feel like it; maintaining school-football life balance. It comes from the fact maybe one player, for example, is struggling to keep up his grades, make all his work outs and practice sessions, and help take care of a sick relative at the same time. We all have our burdens to bear; being a student athlete at any level is not a Sunday stroll in the park, am I correct?

Prior to this season I had never heard of the Utah Utes. I admit that at first I was really bummed that the Crimson Tide would face a team in the postseason that I considered to be a non brand name. I wanted us to face off against Texas or USC, for example. I whined to my family and friends, who all agreed with me. (Misery loves company!)

Now my goal is to get over it, accord the Utah team the respect and esteem they already deserve, and look forward to game day.

That's OK, neither is the Utah one. That's Eric Weddle, who is currently a starter for the San Diego Chargers. (And who, coincidentally, was a whopping 2-star recruit coming out of HS. Just one of the reasons why most Ute fans don't put much stock into the recruiting class arguments. :))
