Former Wake Forest quarterback Jamie Newman has yet to announce where he will be playing in 2020, but the ex-Demon Deacons passer is trending toward landing at Georgia.

Georgia recruiting expert Kipp Adams is one of three 247Sports experts currently projecting Newman to land with the Bulldogs.

Newman has seen his stock rise in the last week since he announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal, and Georgia has undeniably become that much more attractive in recent days among potential destinations for Deacon. The Bulldogs find themselves in the market for a graduate transfer after three-year starter Jake Fromm announced his decision to declare early for the 2020 NFL Draft on Wednesday. Fromm played in 43 straight games at UGA with 42 starts where he has amassed a record of 35-8 as the starter.

UGA went on to finish 11-1 in the regular season in all three years with Fromm as the starter, so it goes without saying that the bar has been set high for whoever succeeds him under center. With Fromm's departure, Georgia is left with rising fourth-year junior Stetson Bennett IV, rising redshirt freshman D'Wan Mathis, and true freshman Carson Beck at quarterback on the current roster.

In 2019, Newman went 220 for 361 passing (60.9%) for 2,868 yards 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and 180 carries (including sacks) for 574 yards and six scores in 13 games. As you can tell by the numbers, Newman is a dual-threat quarterback and he burst onto the scene in 2019 for a Wake Forest team that went 7-5. Four of those five losses game in the last five games of the season and Newman struggled against the likes of Clemson, Syracuse, and Michigan State, but, on paper, he'd have more talent around him if he heads to Athens.

The Miami Hurricanes are also said to be on the shortlist for Newman among other top programs vying for his services. According to Fox sideline reporter Bruce Feldman, Newman narrowed his list to Oregon, Georgia, Washington, Miami and Maryland as his final five. Miami recently hired new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, who oversaw an SMU attack that was one of the most potent in the country in 2019. The Mustangs averaged 41.8 points per game under Lashlee’s direction. SMU also averaged 489 yards per game.

With Oregon, Newman would replace 10,541 career yards and 95 touchdowns in Justin Herbert, who just led the Ducks to a Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin. Wherever he lands, Newman is rated as one of the top-three quarterbacks in 2020, according to Pro Football Focus.

Should Newman head elsewhere than Georgia, the Bulldogs won't be without other options in replacing Fromm. There's a very good chance that Georgia takes the transfer route regardless of Newman's destination. Dawgs247 offered up a list including Newman and several others that could become viable options.

Georgia is coming off a 12-2 overall finish to the 2019 campaign. The team ended the season with a Sugar Bowl victory over Baylor on Jan. 1.

That didn't take long. A day after Jake Fromm announced that he'll be foregoing his senior season at Georgia, the Bulldogs moved quickly in added coveted Wake Forest graduate transfer quarterback Jamie Newman. He will enroll at Georgia in the coming days and participate in winter workouts and spring drills.

The dual-threat quarterback announced his decision via Twitter on Thursday, likely filling a major void for the Bulldogs in 2019.

Newman led the Demon Deacons to a 8-5 record in 2019, his first and only season as the full-time starter. He completed 220 of 361 passes (60.9 percent) for 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also did quite a bit of damage on the ground, piling up 574 yards and six touchdowns on 180 carries and that includes sacks. He started all 13 games for Wake Forest in 2019.

As a passer, Newman had long completions of 70, 62 and two of 59 yards as a fourth-year junior. As a runner, his longest rush was 50 yards in 2019 and he had another of 42 yards. He also threw for 401 yards in the season opener against Utah State and rushed for 144 yards in November against Duke.

Newman was one of the top players on the graduate transfer market after the 2019 season regardless of position. Oregon, Miami, Maryland, and Washington were all reportedly aiming to gain his services after it was announced that he would be entering the NCAA's student-athlete transfer portal and seeking to finish out his college career at another school

ā€œWith some of these early departures and graduations, keep an eye on former Wake Forest QB, Jamie Newman,ā€ SEC and ESPN College Football analyst Greg McElroy after Fromm m his decision on Wednesday. ā€œHe will be a very hot commodity as a Grad-Transfer. He has a ton of talent and potential.ā€

The Bulldogs currently have former walk-on turned junior college player turned scholarship quarterback Stetson Bennett IV on the roster. He served as Fromm's backup in 2019. They also have 2019 signee D'Wan Mathis, who didn't participate in 2019 due to surgery to remove a cyst from his brain in May of 2019. Mathis practiced with the team all season but has not yet been cleared for contact although he expects that to happen in time to play in 2020. Four-star 2020 quarterback signee Carson Beck is also in the mix. He has already enrolled at UGA and will go through spring drills as well.

Newman instantly becomes a major contender for the starting job at UGA and he's likely the favorite due to his versatile skill set, talent, and experience. No other quarterback on Georgia's current roster has started in a game and only Bennett has played, appearing in four games in 2019. With four, Kirby Smart now has more scholarship signal callers on the roster for spring drills than at any point during his previous four years as the Georgia head coach.
