šŸˆ Even after 30-3 loss to Clemson, Notre Dame AD sees little talent difference between the two teams?

Jack Swarbrick knows what a serious differential of talent looks like on the big stage. After all, the Notre Dame athletic director was front and center on the sidelines for Notre Dameā€™s destruction at the hands of Alabama in the lopsided 2013 BCS National Championship Game.

Despite a 30-3 margin in the teamā€™s College Football Playoff Semifinal loss to eventual champion Clemson in January however, Swarbrick thinks things are much different in South Bend this time around under head coach Brian Kelly.

ā€œI came off the field against Alabama thinking, ā€˜Weā€™ve got a lot of work to do here.ā€™ I didnā€™t feel that way at all in this game,ā€ Swarbrick told The Athletic. ā€œClemson is an exceptional team. They are very good. And they played that way. But I didnā€™t see a significant talent differential. I didnā€™t see a program differential in terms of strength and conditioning, or preparedness. I thought we had units on the field that were the better of the two in some positions, some areas.

ā€œThey were really good and they were really hot, which they proved the next week.ā€

While thereā€™s no question that Notre Dame has upgraded the talent level on the team in recent years and become very competitive nationally, there is still a bit of a gap between the program and some of the elites in the sport (namely the Tigers and Crimson Tide).

Of course, thatā€™s not an awful place to be as much as Irish alums hate to hear it considering, well, everybody in college football has a gap between them and those two nowadays.

Could anyone see Urban Frank Meyer maybe going to Notre Dame instead of So Cal even with the academic hurdle he would haft to maneuver around , that he wouldnā€™t in Cali ? I know he is catholic and has stated that itā€™s a dream job .

Timing is everything in this business. Kelly would have to step aside or take another dip backward with his record. The Ohio State job was just perfect timing in every way. Meyer would have to be hanging around, waiting for all this. Right now, USC looks like they are one more mediocre season away from pulling the trigger, so they might get the first crack at the Urban myth.

Especially if they think...maybe know....that Urb would take job....
I still think AU is in same situation.....if they absolutely KNOW Urb would come....
And like him or not....he is one of the best

That's true enough. And they have great agents who can get that type of info out in a heartbeat. My only hesitation with Urban is his health. These last 2 jobs have taken a toll on his mental health. Of course with people the moment they are out of the stressful situation they tend to think they are cured or have it under control. At his age, who knows. But he can coach.

I disagree. The Pac-12 is the easy Urban path, I'll be surprised if he comes back to the SEC. No way he agrees to play against Alabama and Georgia every year.

When things got tough at Florida AND Ohio State, he QUIT. And he'll probably quit on quitting, which means he'll be back to coaching again.

My opinion of the guy isn't very high :)

It's going to be interesting this fall when the Irish invade Athens. The last thing that needs to happen is for these guys to get blown out and look overmatched. That's what Kelly believes isn't happening. Scheme can get the best of any team and Clemson can provide that, as we are well aware. But Georgia is going to run a lot or pro set stuff and ND won't have much to fall back on as an excuse if they implode, again.

Why would Meyer even remotely give the barn a second thought? Yes my view of the Barn is through crimson glasses they my view is that organization would not attract elite coach as many believe Meyer is. They can certainly attract an elite coach wannabee who thinks he is elite...

@50+yeartidefan I don't question the money, I question Urban's competitive drive to face Alabama, Georgia, and the rest of the SEC yearly.

Can he really leave Auburn disgraced like he's done at Florida and Ohio State?
Got ya.....
But...I believe he left osu more because of the suspension and lack of support....and he was pissed....
ur thoughts on not wanting the SEC are probably well founded....
But AU has had enough of Bama and scared of falling well behind UGA ....
He really is a good fit for AU...

He took on Georgia, LSU, Tennessee, as well as Florida State while they still were competitive on a yearly basis while in Gainesville. At his age and mental instability at this time I think you're correct that it doesn't seem as necessary if he doesn't have to, but I don't think he shoes away from any of those guys.
