Something that caught my eye on Twitter this morning. MJH...being a Bama fan puts her in a bit of a different light but still that wasn't a show I watched, thought of watching..would block if I could.

Part of the overall move to make everything more "gritty". I think it started with the Dark Knight movies and now everyone has jumped on the bandwagon. It will come back around to the campy stuff at some point I hope.

Good point to bring up--the genres have changed, A LOT, over the past several years.

Another symptom of what you've mentioned here is the number of characters you see written out of scripts/series by death. The number of shows that are killing off characters has to be at an all time high.
