I don't think traffic will be that big a deal if you make the trip on Saturday or Sunday going west, and since Monday is New Year's Eve the usual work traffic should not be a factor. But simply accidents on I-20 through Jackson/Pearl and Vicksburg can cause some unpleasant delays.
I have also noticed that the Pearl Police are enforcing the speed limit more closely east of Pearl on I-20. Once you pass Brandon's last exit heading west, keep an eye open until you reach Tinseltown, Bass Pro Shop, Mississippi Braves ballpark complex on your right.
Do watch your speed heading west on I-20 between both Clinton, MS exits and the Natchez Trace exit (city law enforcement, in particular, is bad through here).
Also, right as you reach the Hwy 61 North - Rolling Fork and Yazoo City exit just before you get into Vicksburg, both Vicksburg Police and MSHP like to run radar at the curve immediately after this exit (will be parked in the median just behind a stand of trees). The speed limit drops to 60 MPH until you cross the Mississippi River Bridge. During holidays, the speed limit is strictly enforced through this area. Be careful if you do try to observe the speed limit through here; truckers will push you big time.
Also heading west, stay in your left lane from the Rolling Folk exit until you pass two merging exits onto I-20 from Clay Street/ Vicksburg National Military Park. Slow merging vehicles will usually be greeting you on your right.
Everyone have a safe trip.
