For considering it a major selector,
they sure don't bother to make much mention of it these days on their national championship rundowns... If I recall, the Houlgate poll was almost more like a computer poll, ahead of its time in its methodology. And it very well may have selected the "best" overall team that season in Bama. But even taking into account the prehistoric ways champions were crowned back then, the fact is the trophy (ironically named after one of their former coaches) resides in Minnesota.
1941 is by far Bama's least legitimate NC claim, to the point like others said, it tarnishes the rest just by association. Greg Byrne coming out and announcing that it will no longer be recognized, days after auburn stakes claim to similar make believe titles, would be the nut kicking of all nut kickings to them (while also bolstering the legitimization of our remaining ones). And while I think UA deserved one in 1966, I would pass on claiming it at this point. Sucks for that team, but that's how I see it.
Also, I have no clue as to the validity of this, there is at least some question about whether or not Houlgate did list Bama #1 in their final rankings that season... evidence is difficult to find, other than this newspaper clipping....

And yes. Whoever can claim whatever, it isn't a huge deal. But if I had my choice, I'd take this easy opportunity here, that has been presented by auburn, to "fix" the 1941 issue while also making them look like the absolute clowns that they are. It would be a PR beating worse than what Bama did to them
on the field in 2012.
