Defense

I keep hearing the sports announcers swing back and forth, Bama has the better D, Lsu has the better D. LSU's strength of schedule is better than Bama's, Bama has the better players, 10 NFL type players. It will all boil down to a few things, Bama is more Physical, LSU is supposedly a little faster. Terry eluded to Chavis's style of D as being less disciplined once things stop going their way, and that is true, but one thing that has not been posted is this, on D our LB's are better, I think we also have the edge in DB's, and they have the edge in D-line, only because of the style D we run, the 3-4. Its a flexible defense, can bring pressure from all angles and designed to confuse the QB's. Coach Saban has said... "The one thing that any kind of a 3-4 gives you is better multiples to pressure," "You're symmetrical so you can do it either way. In a 4-3, it's a little easier to read the overloads." So to me the D-line is a moot point because of the Defense we run.

One thing is for sure, Bama will smack you in the mouth, and will be physical. My opinion, Bama has the better D.

Total stats and ranking among top 25.

Alabama ranked 1st, LSU ranked 3. http://content.usatoday.com/sportsdata/football/ncaaf/stats/team-total-defense
Both are great defenses and no doubt the top in the country. Bottom line, a slug fest is brewing.

Offense

I dont understand why Bama isnt getting the credit here they deserve. Ranked 23rd in the country in total offense, Where is LSU ranked you ask? 78th, yes thats right 78th. http://content.usatoday.com/sportsdata/football/ncaaf/stats/team-total-offense

Breaking it down by the numbers, Bama beats LSU in every Statistical catagory on offense. Lets break it down by players..

QBs
AJ McCarron- Completions 134 Attempts 200, Yards 1664 10 Tds- 3 Int's and a rating of 150.4 (Sophomore)
Jarret Lee- Completions 98 Attempts 155, Yards 1250 13 Tds-1 int and a rating of 157.4 (Senior)
(Flying under the radar AJ McCarron, and is matching A senior flat out.) Bama1966 opinion, McCarron is down right good! Better than good, and LSU fans are underestimating him, Period.

RBs

Trent Richardson- 149 carries 989 yards and 17 rushing Tds
Eddie Lacy- 58 carries 465 yards and 5 tds
Spencer Ware- 128 carries 512 yards and 6 rushing Tds
Micheal Ford- 79 carries 441 yards and 6 rushing Tds

Seriously? LSU thinks they have the better RBS? Trent averages out better than LSUs top two combined. Cmon Man!

LSU has the advantage here with the WRs

WRs ( top player for both teams)

Marquis Maze- 39 rec. 482 yards 1 TD
Rueben Randle- 33 rec. 638 yards 6 Tds

Bama Stats http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/stats/_/id/333/alabama-crimson-tide
LSU Stats http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/stats/_/id/99/lsu-tigers

Coaches

Nick Saban- 142 wins 53 losses 1 Tie (2 Champ rings)
Les Miles- 98 wins 38 Losses ( 1 Champ Ring)

Whomever the LSU poster that thinks Les Miles is in Sabans head, wishes they had Saban back. Cant for the life of me figure that out. Both Solid coaches, to me the edge goes to Saban, Miles has done well, and deserves respect, but he aint Nick Saban. Period.
As I read over everything I cant help but think this is going to be a solid game for 3 quarters and Bama will pull away in the 4th. Playing in Tuscaloosa to me, gives Bama the edge and IMHO Bama is more Physical, and has better skilled players at more positions than LSU. Make no mistake, LSU is good, and they will give Bama Hell, but my gut feeling says Bama will win.

Bama 1966's Bold prediction- Bama 27 LSU 14

Until Nov 5th, have fun on the board Bengal Tigers and Welcome to the best Bama Message board on the web!

Roll Tide!

i like your point about the linebackers. we have the best bunch of linebackers in the country.

LSU has a problem stopping the run consistently. i have seen two lackluster teams run the ball very well against them at times and after reading your post i'm wondering if what i was considering to be a problem of an undersized faster D-line might just be poor linebacker play by LSU. either way... we're going to run the ball on them worse than they've had all year. there is no doubt in my mind about that.

FRY THE CORNDOGS!!!

Are the 2 teams you are referring to Kentucky and Tennessee? Kentucky ran for 89 yards. Tennessee ran for 111. Do you think either of those are running the ball very well?

The truth is no team is invincible and LSU has looked beatable this year at times. And I am sure their fans would say the same about Alabama.

What do I mean, here it is.
Oregon: Out gained LSU offensively, and managed scoring drives (TDs) of 19 plays for 79 yards, 13 plays for 68 yards, and 10 plays for 70 yards. They did however commit four turnovers.
Miss State: States defense ranks 21st held the Tigers to a season low 19 points.
West Virginia:
Out gained LSU offensively and put up an outrageous 463 yards in the air. But if you turn the ball over 4 times it isn’t going to work. Scoring drives (TDs) of 12 plays for 73 yards, 6 plays for 80 yards, and 5 plays for 90 yards.
Kentucky: Managed a 12 play 70 yard drive for a passing TD.
Tennessee: Had one TD drive of 10 plays for 80 yards ending in a rushing TD.
Auburn: Also had one TD drive of 10 plays for 86 yards ending with a rushing TD.

The bottom line is that the LSU defense is solid, but they live off the turnover and mistakes by the other team. (Duh, I know!) They have given up long touchdown drives this year.

Alabama has given up six TD’s this year, but only three were on long drives. Two of those were to Arkansas which has the # 23 Offense in the country, and one was to Penn State against the 2nd string with 2:00 left in the game.

This game will not be a blowout either way unless one team implodes and turns the ball over, which is what LSU hopes for. I am not disrespecting them, but they have shown that teams can drive on them. And LSU's offense as noted above ranks 78th and will hopefully be the edge Bama needs to win.

* And no team has out gained Alabama this year.

Those stats look nice, but lets really look at those drives:
Oregon drive of 13 plays for 68 yards. LSU was up 33 to 13 at the time. They were in a prevent defense and forced Oregon to take up some clock on that drive. Good strategy
Oregon drive of 10 plays for 70 yards. LSU was up 40 to 20 and had the third team defense. The drive started with 2:52 left in the game and LSU was in prevent.

Yes, they passed for 463 yards, but they threw the ball 65 times. They run a hurry up offense. LSU scored a lot, so they were on the field more. Not sure if this game has any significance because the WVU offense and Bama offense are worlds apart in style. If we were playing OK St or Texas Tech, then this game would be relevant.

Kentucky 12 play 70 yard drive. LSU was up 35-0 when the drive started. We were in prevent and had our 3rd team in. If we are beating bama bad and have our 3rd team in a prevent, you guys can score.

Tennessee 10 play 80 yard drive - This was the 1 good drive Tennessee had. Their second longest drive was 40 yards.

Auburn 10 play 86 yard drive - LSU was up 45-3 when the drive started. We had our 3rd team in and were in prevent.

So 4 of those impressive drives were against our 3rd team prevent defense late in the game. LSU was up 20,20, 35 and 42 when each of the drives started.

Nice stats, but they don't mean a thing if you watched the games.

So 4 of those impressive drives were against our 3rd team prevent defense late in the game. LSU was up 20,20, 35 and 42 when each of the drives started.

Nice stats, but they don't mean a thing if you watched the games.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm just not in the habit of watching LSU games. It's one bad thing about being a season ticket holder too. I don't get to see much else outside of BDS. Anyway, your offense is still an issue and the defense has still thrived on the turnover. That's my main point.

* 3rd team? Really? Maybe 2nd defense. I don't know many teams that put in a 3rd of anything.

What about our offense is an issue?

I watched alot of the Oregon game and how can it be prevent if you're sending 5 and 6 rushers? I doubt seriously there is a 3rd team!! So they were playing walk ons? Prevent is a defense that allows for extemely soft coverages and extremely deep safeties.
Your offense is an "issue" because it isn't putting up gaudy numbers like alot of the top teams. Ranking #78 out of 120 often puts a team right around the 5-3 category and not undefeated. They have gone about their business and produced. Will they be able to drive the field when needed come "nut cutting time"? It won't be against Oregon and their 250lb D linemen or West Virginia and the couch burners. Nor will it be against the Barn and their piss poor defense, that according to their fans, has gotten better with each game. It will be against the best defense in the nation that has suffocated each and every offense in the second half of every game.
LSU lives and dies off of creating turnovers. How will they perform when they don't get the ball from us. We have turned the ball over 1 time since the opening game of the season. "1"!!!!

I dont understand why Bama isnt getting the credit here they deserve. Ranked 23rd in the country in total offense, Where is LSU ranked you ask? 78th, yes thats right 78th.

True, according to yardage. But notice offensive scoring---Bama, 40 TD's, LSU, 41 TD's. This is where LSU's opportunistic defense comes in--forcing turnovers, getting good field position, and not always having to drive as far or accumulate more yardage to score more points.

FRY THE CORNDOGS!!!

C'mon, Tide Fans! You really want to copy some crap that AUBURN came up with? Especially after they copied if off of Oklahoma (re: Nebraska fans--i.e. cornhuskers)

Good luck finding an actual corndog anywhere near Tiger Stadium.

Good point, UAGrad93...since neither team turns it over much at all (other than Kent State!) it will be interesting to see who can sustain drives, or get field position with the kicking game. Barring TO's, that is the game right there.

It was a prevent d when we were up 20 points late in the 4th quarter and had 5th year seniors that never play. We were aggressive most of the game, but not late in the 4th quarter with a 20 point lead.

LSU is putting up 37.9 ppg which is right below Bama at 39.4 ppg. 37.9 ppg ranks 14th in the country. Bama is 13th.

Our yardage may be lower because of good field position. When we get a turnover in a game, should the defender run back 20 yards so our offensive yardage numbers will look better?

Uhhh, Bama has held a crapton of teams to three and outs also, might even be leading the SEC in that, which equals good field position for Bama. I get the feeling that no matter how the numbers are shown and proved that spinning will be provided. BOTH teams have held opponents in check, BOTH teams are the top D's in the country, BOTH teams hold their opponents to little yardage which in turn generates great field position for BOTH teams.

Look, LSU is a great football team, its a shame that these two have to face each other and take the other out of the BCS game. Without a doubt these two teams are the best the country has, period. But to say only LSU holds teams to shorter field position is the reason you all have less yards than us, is down right spinning. Hey, I could spin this and say.... since your Offense doesn't have that many long drives it is gonna hurt LSU, because we have had more. On and On this could go. Statistics, also mean squat IMHO, I just offer them for proof, when, lets say, a LSU Tiger fan comes blazing in on a Bama board with a post telling us the top 10 reasons we will lose is because..... and it is false, I in kind show proof. Just like Nov 5th will tell who of these two on that day is better and more prepared, or if Les Miles is still in Nick Sabans mind. By the way, Coach Saban has preached to all of us Bama fans that he loved being in LSU, and was proud of the Teams accomplishments. I found that the true Character of the Coach that gives a **** about his players at LSU, Michigan State or Alabama.

FWIW, the "corndogs" title started in the mid-east years ago with Iowa fans...just so happened it fell on LSU fans a decade or so ago.

my favorite drive against LSu was the tennessee one. i believe they threw maybe once? the rest were average running plays one right after the other and LSu was doing everything they could to stop it. i was belly-laughing at the fighting jambalayas.

Granted, Tennessee did run on the Tigers that first drive. That's the one the reporters like to use as an example too--what they ignore is once the game got going, particularly the second half. Time of possession? Tigers 22 minutes,3 possessions, 3 LONG drives for TD's---Tennessee 8 minutes, 2 possessions.

Kinda like the Bama-UT game--second half domination.

This game will boils down to two critical factors.
  • UA executing and not giving LSU a short field with mistakes.
  • If LSU is held below 100 yards rushing they lose by 10+.
LSU's defense is good, really good. Their offensive deficiencies are covered by their defense and not being forced to take risks to move the ball. Once Lee and/or Jefferson are forced to consistently make the plays they will be toast.

My two cents worth:

Both teams have outstanding defenses.

Bama's offense has scored both on big plays and on sustained drives. LSU is more of a big play offense. If Bama is able to stuff LSU's run game (and I think they will) LSU's offense is in the hands of Lee and Jefferson. How well they handle the pass rush determines who wins. LSU may hit a big play or so, but I am sure Randle will draw a lot of attention in our game plan. I don't see him being able to release long without being bumped or jammed very often. I am not there yet, but I am comming around towards Terry's view on this game.

I'd have to agree with this and usn92's assessment. If, if , if...why can't the game be tomorrow!!!!!!
