This happened last night here in Sylacauga. I know both of these men really well, so much in fact, that I refer to them as my friends. Joey collapsed during a play with a heart attack. Lew stayed calm and cool, quickly performed CPR on Joey, bringing him back twice. Joey is in stable condition at Grandview because of the actions taken by Lew. Joey was a volunteer coach with us when I first came to Sylacauga. A good guy with a big heart, who loves his alma mater and his community. Lew, a devoted father and pillar in this community, I initially met while coaching his two sons.
Sylacauga has recently been in the news for the wrong reasons, but last night showed that some good things are still happening here.

I had a cousin that died from a massive heart attack at the age of 43. Scared the piss out of me and I was only 38. Went to a cardiologist and was told I have a genetic marker making me more susceptible than most. Did a nuclear stress test and he damn near killed me because he couldn’t get my heart rate up fast enough. He asked if I was an athlete and I said, “I was a walk on at BAMA!”

Had a stress test at 43. Stopped it half way through. Arteriogram that afternoon, 3 bypasses at 5:00 the next morning
Back home after 5 days.
Blessed that they caught it (on a regular physical exam) - no heart attack.

I'll say this, if you're going down with a heart attack, and you aren't at the hospital, or a fire station, or some place like a cardiology convention, having one on the field during a football game at the major HS, college, or pro level is about you're next best bet as far as surviving. It may not allow for much privacy, but the tradeoff I'd suspect is worth it.

Thankfully, officials and coaches have to be CPR certified in the state and have for awhile now, upwards of 20+ years for coaches. Thankfully, Lew took action and didn’t hesitate to see if someone else was going to do it.

No one should wait to see if someone else going to do it. I know that guy save his life.
