Angry with small crowd, Nick Saban says Alabama students not 'entitled to anything'

There were noticeable gaps in the student section in Saturday's game with Louisiana-Lafayette and Nick Saban noticed.

Speaking at his regular Wednesday news conference in response to fans' reaction to Tua Tagovailoa, Saban took an opportunity to address the empty seats in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Saban said he was disappointed in what he saw and they were looking into ways to address that.

"I don't think they're entitled to anything either," Saban said. "Me personally, I think it ought to be first come, first served. And if they don't want to come to the game, they don't have to come but I'm sure there's enough people out here who would like to come to the games and we'd like for them to come too because they support the players. So, I've never said anything about that before."

A few players posted their disappointment in the crowd on Twitter this week. Running back retweeted a photo of the empty student section saying it "makes me sad." Long snapper Thomas Fletcher retweeted a video of Penn State's wild student section Saturday night against Ohio State saying "Must be nice to have people come to your home games."

Saban didn't say how it was going to be addressed but was clearly unhappy with it.

"When I first came here, they used to play that Tradition thing (video) up there and everybody was cheering and excited and happy and there was great spirit," Saban said. "Now, they don't even cheer. They introduce our players and nobody even cheers. So, I don't know. Maybe there's something else somebody should talk about and maybe I shouldn't talk about it and maybe I already talked about more than I should. So, you can beat me up for that if you want."

The Louisiana-Lafayette game kicked off at 11 a.m. CT Saturday on Parents Weekend for students.

The official attendance was listed at just below capacity at 101,471, but that figure counts tickets sold and not the number of people who walk through the turnstiles.

"Look, our players work too hard and they deserve to have everything and people supporting them in every way and have tremendous spirit for what they've done," Saban said. "And they might not be able to continue to do it and we're going to work hard to continue that but there's a part of it that other people need to support them too. And there has to be a sprit that makes it special to play here because that's what makes it special to be here. And it that's not here, does it continue to be special to be here or not? That's the question everybody has to ask and I'm asking it right now."

"We've always had great people travel on the road with us and had great spirit on the road and we've got great fans, so I appreciate that. But to see half the student section not full, I've never seen that since I've been here before."

While I absolutely agree with everything CNS says... And think it should come to fruition.... I'd like to remind him - Even he isn't entitled to have fans do what he wants them to do. Entitlement works in a lot of ways, sometimes in the media I think he loses site of that.

Still the GOAT. So whatevs

It sure feels like Alabama has one of the worst attendance offending student sections in the country for elite teams? I don't see how complaining about it makes any difference though. Either they get tickets or they don't, but regardless, fans pretty much come and go as they please. The halftime exodus with all fans out of BDS on Saturday was also very evident on the telly.

I think this is a culmination of several factors. When the south endzone was expanded the student body petitioned the school and received a larger allotment of student tickets. With the new modifications, I would not be surprised if the University makes the students take the hit for most of the seats in the downsizing.

It's hard for games like this to sell out, but if you look at the pics, the season ticket holders are there. I have always been fortunate enough to sale my tickets or have someone take them and represent Bama in my place, if I can't make it. Most season ticket holders are that way. This is going to be interesting to watch going forward. With such a large waiting list, I'm sure the university would rather sale to a TP member at full price as opposed to selling tickets to students and 1/3 of the price to only have large empty sections.

I've been saying for years that they need to reduce the student section by around 4,000-5,000 seats and give them to TP. By the way; what's with the fraternities and sororities (maybe) holding their signs up high for all to see? Do they really think we give a rats ... they’re in whatever fraternity and they’re there? Do they actually think we’re there to see them and some frat competition? I know fraternities at Alabama is ridiculously a huge thing for some reason; I've just never understood the concept of paying for friends.

A couple of things that I see as problems when it comes to the student section, 1) the HUGE uptick in out of state students makes for a weaker connection to the school and the team and 2) BLOCK seating. Do away with it!!! Make it first come first serve and get in with your student ID. The SGA petitioned the school for more tickets when the South expansion was completed and got them. They petitioned and received more for BLOCK seating as well. They give away some type of prize for "best attendance" at each game, but obviously, the students in these groups don't give a shit!!

Well your misconception of "paying for friends" would be your first issue in understanding. And they are pledges holding signs so the brothers and their dates know where to sit. Of course you know where your section is, but it's a right of passage to make the pledges sit there and hold the sign.

I believe the student section needs to be decreased. A lot of seats up top and a long waiting list for Tide Pride would solve that issue. The only thing I hate for the first come first serve was that it did not allow you to enjoy Gameday. That is the essence of college football, getting to have fun with friends, walk campus, take in the scenery, tailgate and eat, and enjoy yourself in the stadium for a few hours every Saturday. When I was a student you had to be in the stadium two hours before the game just to get lower level, and then what, sit there for two hours doing nothing? That just wasn't who I was, I soaked it all in and enjoyed the atmosphere and then the game, and then the nightlife.

I understand where Coach and the players are coming from, but comparing prime time against a Top 5 team to an 11AM CST kickoff against Louisiana Lafayette is laughable. I do think Alabama fans are entitled and expect results, kind of like the Process and how Coach says some buy in and others think they can coast off what was done by the guys before them. I gave my tickets to a grandfather that took his autistic grandson and they had an absolute blast! I'll be there for Missouri and Mississippi State. Let's see what the stadium looks like when Auburn, LSU, Georgia, Texas, and Notre Dame come to town. People want to see matchups, not slaughters.

I think another issue is that the ticket offices made a lot of partnerships with ticket brokers during the uprising of Coach Saban. I mean, think back during the first Championship run and the ones in between and how crazy ticket prices were. You couldn't find tickets to a game in a decent spot for less than $200 a ticket most of the time. So many folks were priced out during the run that it made it impossible. This is where watching on a nice new TV in the confines of your own home became the better option for most. The Alabama ticket market has died out due to sheer domination of everyone. The sticker shock also watered down interest. No one even really competes anymore other than Auburn and LSU. So these ticket brokers still try to make double and triple of their tickets on an Ole Miss, Citadel, and Arkansas and they just eat them, leaving a lot of empty seats.

I would like to say as a student it never mattered to me, I was always there. College football is the greatest event in the world to me, and we only get 7-8 a year.

Ok...
Sure make alll first come first seve...no brainer...
Reduce student seats available...no brainer....
Season ticket holder...not going to games can donate their tickets to those with a student id (kinda an exchange managed by student organization)....if they would rather help students rather than sell tics...
Its a big university made up of many smart people.... theres a problem....solve it
Especially some of those being relocated due to the elephant size video board...
....but in saying....it is a shit to have a11 o’clock game... they suck as bad as the 8-830 kickoffs....

I didn’t go last weekend, but tried to sell mine at cost and then even tried to give them away. I got no takers and ended up eating them. I imagine the time, heat, and then the opponent played a HUGE role in attendance. I normally, go to every single home game but couldn’t last week due to a family matter.

Wish I had known, I would have tried to buy them off you. I have not been able to go to a home game since the 89 season due to living in Ohio and the long drive to Tuscaloosa. I have to resort to going to Knoxville, Lexington or Nashville.

I agree with what other posters are saying but I am going to add my two cents as well. 1. Improve the out of conference schedule! I realize that is not popular with many but geez, LL really? UT Chattanooga really? Northwest Central State really? I have a copy of the out of conference games for the next few years somewhere and I can that its not real strong. As I have stated on here several times, Power 5 schools should schedule and play Power 5 schools. 2. If the students are not attending day games for whatever reason, reduce the allotment and let people that would like to attend an Alabama game go. Rant over...for now.
