1966 was the year before I was born but have read many accounts of this team and why people thought we deserved the National title then, especially that defense!1977 was the first season I remember the Tide getting the "treatment" from the media when they leap-frogged Notre Dame over Alabama after BAMA whooped Ohio St 35-6. (ND beat Texas who was #1 at the time) BAMA had previously lost to Nebraska in the 2nd game that year and Notre Dame lost to Ole Miss a team BAMA manhandled in week 1 of that season.
