Alabama looks to build off its thrilling victory against Georgia with a trip to Nashville as conference play picks up momentum. Alabama is 60-19-4 all-time against Vanderbilt and carries a 12-game winning streak, due to a forfeited win in 1993. Vandy’s last win on the field happened 4 decades ago.

Vanderbilt started the season with an overtime win against the Virginia Tech Hokies, in a game where Vandy started with a 17-point lead, yet needed a score with under 2 minutes left in the 4th to extend the game to overtime. Vandy followed up that win with a blowout against Alcorn State before losing a stunner on the road against the Georgia State Panthers on a touchdown score in the final seconds. Two weeks ago, the Commodores lost a heartbreaker on the road against #7 Missouri by pulling a game tying field goal in the second overtime period. Vandy is coming off a bye, so they have had a little extra time to lick their wounds.

The Vanderbilt offense is led by former New Mexico State QB Diego Paiva. The 2023 Conference USA Offensive Player of the year has Nashville buzzing and the attention of Alabama DC Kane Wommack:

“…you look at the level of competitive attitude that those guys play with, you see that come from their quarterback. The dude is a real baller. He’s physical. He’s tough. He makes the non-traditional play on the field numerous times. He’s going to be challenging for us when you look at an option-style offense and the way their quarterback navigates their offense. You can tell there’s a confidence from the rest of his teammates that I think he breathes into their football team.”

Paiva has taken care of the ball and thrown for 6 scores with no turnovers in 2024. He has also carried the ball 71 times for 279 and 2 scores and is the team’s leading rusher. The leading Commodore receiver is a 6’4 senior TE from Texas who played with Paiva last season at NMSU. On the other side of the ball, Vanderbilt is led by junior lead tackler Langston Patterson. The defense surrenders 330 yards per game and has given up at least 30 to each 2024 opponent with a pulse.

Verdict: I am interested to see how Alabama challenges Paiva’s athleticism and the read option, and if the Bama defense can cause a mistake that leads to his first turnover. Bama should be able to create separation on the other side of the ball.
